The tradition and morality of the Vietnamese people of “When drinking water, remember its source”, “When eating fruit, remember the one who planted the tree” like the source always flows in the blood of the Vietnamese people. Therefore, naturally, everyone remembers and reminds each other about the great event of the country - July 27. The number of martyrs with names or without names lying in cemeteries nationwide, the remains that have not been found or the wounded soldiers with lingering pain seem to awaken the conscience of those who are still living. Since July 27, 1947, War Invalids and Martyrs Day has been officially chosen as a national holiday. This is an occasion for “people to show their filial piety, charity and love for the wounded soldiers” as expected by the proposers.
Since then, the thoughts and actions, words and deeds of cadres, civil servants, public employees, and all classes of people, especially women, young men and women, and teenagers, have always been devoted to martyrs, wounded soldiers, those who have contributed to the revolution, and their relatives. For their part, they sacrifice and dedicate their bodies not to be remembered and rewarded, but because of their “duty”.
Throughout its history, Vietnam has had periods of being annexed or having to “struggle” under the yoke of foreign invasion. As children of the Vietnamese land and citizens of a country, martyrs and wounded soldiers were aware of and fulfilled their duty to save the country. When the Fatherland had an urgent need for unity, independence, peace and freedom, they “went out to preserve the mountains and rivers”. Although they knew for sure that the war was fierce and that it would be a permanent farewell, the children of the Dragon Fairy race were still ready to “go out, go out and swear to die and never retreat”. They “volunteered” with a firm belief: “If I were a bird, I would be a white dove... As a human, I would die for my homeland”, considering death as light as a feather.
Faced with the demands of duty to the Fatherland, they calmly said: “Don’t ask what the Fatherland has done for us, but ask what we have done for the Fatherland today.” With that “simple” and “light” awareness, war invalids and martyrs’ relatives have been and are still “bearing” physical injuries and emotional wounds for many years. Today, people live in peace, happiness and the homeland has been renewed, becoming prosperous, modern and civilized, which is the result of the “duties” of war invalids and martyrs. They have contributed to creating the foundation for the Vietnamese nation.
On the contrary, up to now, the Party and the entire political system have always considered the work of "Repaying gratitude" and taking care of policy families as top priorities. The Party and the State have issued many documents and led and directed the political system to mobilize people from all walks of life to carry out many tasks to support war invalids, families of martyrs and policy families. These actions have partly contributed to easing the pain of loss of families of martyrs and war invalids.
Currently, the Party continues to emphasize: Perfecting and implementing well the laws and policies for people with meritorious services based on State and social resources, ensuring that people with meritorious services and their families have a living standard of average or higher in their residential area, balancing the budget to continue to increase social allowances and preferential allowances for people with meritorious services, fundamentally resolving policies for people with meritorious services; upgrading "Repaying gratitude" works (Documents of the 13th National Congress of Delegates, page 149).
Even in directing the early implementation of the Program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, the Prime Minister also requested relevant agencies to complete before July 27, 2025 for people with meritorious services and relatives of martyrs to "show deep gratitude for the sacrifices and contributions of heroic martyrs and those who have contributed to the revolution". One thing can prove many things!
On the part of the social community, while actively participating in implementing the Party and State's policy on "Repaying gratitude" with specific movements, each person needs to deeply understand their duty in continuing to realize the dreams and aspirations of martyrs and war invalids. Independence, unity, peace and freedom were once sacred values for which heroes, martyrs and war invalids sacrificed their lives. Now, preserving and protecting the longevity of those values must be the duty of every Vietnamese citizen. Accordingly, the practical actions of each person for a strong, modern country, "standing shoulder to shoulder with the world powers" and a happy, civilized Vietnamese people are the most correct answer to "When drinking water, remember the source", "When eating fruit, remember the person who planted the tree"!
When people are aware of their duties and act as a way of life, they become extraordinary. Martyrs and wounded soldiers consider it “light” and therefore, are willing to sacrifice themselves for the Fatherland to gain unity, independence, peace and freedom. Living in a country with sovereignty and territorial integrity, the entire political system and each Vietnamese citizen understand more clearly the national morality and the great duty to make the country eternal, prosperous, modern, and the people happy and civilized. It turns out that when each person understands their duties, responsibilities, and common and individual obligations, not only will their emotional wounds and physical pain be healed soon, but they will also create new useful energy for the journey of building a “more dignified and beautiful” country.
