A "shield" to keep children safe from the danger of drowning.

Every summer brings with it the worry of drowning accidents in many rural areas with rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes. In Cam Lo commune (Quang Tri province), from awareness campaigns in schools to communication activities in residential areas, many practical approaches are contributing to equipping children with the necessary skills to protect themselves, making summer safer and more meaningful.

Build a "shield" from life skills lessons.

As summer arrives, the rivers and streams in Cam Lo commune become familiar playgrounds for many children. Along with this joy comes the constant worry of parents about the ever-present risk of drowning accidents. Therefore, even before students begin their summer vacation, many activities to raise awareness and equip children with water safety skills have been implemented in schools and residential areas to help them proactively protect themselves.

The awareness campaign contributes to raising students' awareness of safety risks in rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes during the summer.

With a dense network of rivers, streams, and ponds such as the Hieu River and La La Stream, along with many areas posing potential safety risks, the issue of preventing drowning is always a priority for the local authorities. Children are identified as a group that needs to be equipped with skills from an early age to know how to protect themselves from potential risks in daily life.

During these awareness sessions, students are guided to identify dangerous areas such as deep ponds, reservoirs, and rivers with strong currents; learn safety principles when playing near bodies of water; learn how to wear life jackets correctly; and how to call for help in case of an emergency. They are also reminded not to attempt to rescue others without professional skills to avoid unfortunate accidents.

Those lessons became more engaging when the students got to directly practice first aid skills for drowning victims. From chest compressions and artificial respiration to positioning the victim safely, each step was specifically instructed so that students could easily remember and apply them when needed.

These training sessions help children develop habits to protect themselves from dangerous situations in the water.

Practical lessons make knowledge more accessible, while also fostering in children the habit of observing, assessing risks, and handling situations to the best of their ability. These are valuable skills that will stay with them throughout their lives.

Along with awareness campaigns, swimming lessons are also organized to help children become familiar with the aquatic environment and improve their self-protection skills. Each additional skill helps reduce potential risks during the summer.

When the whole community works together to protect children

If schools are where the first lessons about water safety are taught, then residential communities are where those lessons are reinforced daily.

Through public address systems, youth union and association meetings, children's summer activities, and social media platforms, the message of protecting children from the risk of drowning is disseminated to every family. Reminders about not letting children go swimming in rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes without adult supervision have gradually become familiar content in community activities.

In addition to public awareness campaigns, the local authorities continue to review areas at high risk of drowning accidents to erect warning signs and strengthen management at potentially dangerous locations. Each warning sign erected serves as a reminder of caution for children and parents.

According to Ms. Duong Thi Thuong, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Cam Lo commune, preventing drowning among children is not only the responsibility of families but also requires the joint efforts of the entire community. In recent times, the Fatherland Front and its member organizations in the area have intensified propaganda in residential areas, encouraging families to pay more attention to supervising their children during the summer, while also raising community awareness about child protection.

During women's association meetings, the topic of drowning prevention is regularly incorporated. Stories about childcare and protection, or skills to prevent accidents and injuries, are shared in accessible language, so that each member can apply them in their own family.

Ms. Le Thi Huong, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Cam Lo commune, said that the Union regularly encourages parents not to let children go to rivers and lakes unsupervised, and also disseminates skills to prevent accidents and injuries in order to raise awareness of child protection in each family.

Meanwhile, the Youth Union of the commune continues to coordinate with schools, families, and relevant departments to organize many activities to guide young people on water safety skills. These experiential and practical sessions help children access knowledge in a more visual and easily understandable way.

The proper way to wear a life jacket is demonstrated visually, helping children proactively protect themselves when participating in water activities.

From small changes in perception

The effectiveness of the awareness campaign is demonstrated through the changes in the perceptions of the people and the students themselves.

Mr. Hoang Duc Thuan, a resident of Ward 3, Cam Lo Commune, said that in the past, many parents were negligent and allowed their children to swim in rivers and streams on their own. Through awareness campaigns, people are increasingly paying more attention to reminding their children to stay away from dangerous places and proactively teaching them to swim and learn water safety skills.

These changes are happening every day in life. Many parents are spending more time paying attention to their children's activities during the summer, proactively reminding them about the potential dangers of playing near rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes.

For students, these awareness campaigns have contributed to the formation of self-protection awareness. Nguyen Thi Thao Ly, a member of the Youth Union at Cam Lo High School, shared that through these campaigns, she better understood the dangers of swimming in rivers and streams and learned how to handle situations involving drowning victims. This knowledge has helped her become more confident in protecting herself and assisting others when needed.

Through training sessions and daily reminders from family, awareness of drowning prevention is gradually being formed in the community. These are simple actions, but they have practical significance for the safety of children.

In the coming period, Cam Lo commune will continue to promote the role of families, schools, and the community in managing and caring for children; at the same time, it will expand safe summer activity models, disseminate life skills and safe swimming skills to young people in order to minimize drowning accidents.

Some lessons only take a few hours to impart but can stay with a child for a lifetime. Properly wearing a life vest, learning first aid, or developing the habit of not going into the water without adult supervision all contribute to protecting children from unforeseen risks.

When families, schools, and communities work together to build these "shields," children's summers will be safer, more peaceful, and more fulfilling.
