Ma Lu Thang border gate economic zone includes 3 communes and 1 town: Ma Li Pho, Huoi Luong, Muong So and Phong Tho town (now merged into Phong Tho commune), with a planning scale of about 26,669 hectares.
This is an important national border economic zone, with functions of trade, production, processing, commerce, tourism , connecting ASEAN with the southwestern region of China.
In the period 2021-2025, the area will be allocated 200 billion VND from the central budget to invest in completing essential infrastructure. In 2020, Ma Lu Thang was upgraded to an international border gate according to Resolution No. 63/NQ-CP.
Lai Chau currently has 1 international border gate, 1 secondary border gate and 6 openings. The province also plans to add more customs clearances such as Ma Lu Thang 2, Song Da international border gate, and 2 other bilateral border gates.
According to the plan, Ma Lu Thang will develop into a multi-sector, multi-field economic center, linked to the development corridor of National Highway 32-4D-12, connecting the Noi Bai-Lao Cai-Lai Chau expressway and expanding trade with China. At the same time, the development orientation will follow the smart border gate model, promoting digitalization and cross-border e-commerce.
The economic zone is divided into 5 functional areas.
Region 1: Border trade economy, services, border gate urban area, area of over 2,166 hectares, forecast population by 2045 is about 6,500 people.
Zone 2: Mixed services, urban residential, area of over 5,062 hectares, forecast population by 2045 is about 30,000 people.
Zone 3: Industrial development, warehouse services, area 198ha.
Zone 4: Developing residential areas and tourism services in the east, area of over 2,773 hectares, forecast population by 2045 is about 11,000 people.
Region 5: Ecological agriculture and forestry, area of over 16,469 hectares, forecast population by 2045 is about 7,500 people.
The planning also identifies priority investment programs such as building technical infrastructure framework, key projects, resettlement, urban development, new rural construction associated with community tourism...
This is an important step to build Ma Lu Thang into a border economic-urban center, contributing to strengthening regional connectivity, expanding international cooperation, while maintaining political stability and protecting national sovereignty in the northwestern border area.
