On July 11th, the Kim Hy Nature Reserve Management Board ( Bac Kan province) announced the first sighting of the white-cheeked black langur within the reserve. This marks the first time in many years that this rare animal, thought to be extinct, has been photographed.

On June 26th, the Na Duong Forest Ranger Station (Kim Hy Nature Reserve) conducted a forest patrol in the Vai To Tam area and discovered a suspected white-cheeked black langur with the following characteristics: a long tail, black fur, and white cheeks. The langur had come down to the edge of the reserve to forage for food, but fled back into the rocky mountains upon spotting the people.

Due to the remote location and dense forest, the task force was unable to take photos or videos. Later, they heard many calls in the forest, which they suspected were individuals from the herd signaling to each other.

Upon receiving a report from the Forest Ranger Station, the leaders of the Kim Hy Nature Reserve Management Board instructed the station to verify the incident.

Upon verification, some villagers who work in the fields in the Vai To Tam area occasionally see the langur troop appearing around 8-9 am in the area belonging to Van Lang commune.

After monitoring and gathering information, on the afternoon of July 10th, the Kim Hy Nature Reserve Management Board discovered and photographed this individual up close. This confirmed that it was indeed a white-cheeked black langur, the first time it has been spotted and photographed in the Kim Hy Nature Reserve .

This video of the rare animal was filmed for the first time by the Kim Hy Nature Reserve Management Board.

Previously, the conservation area was also identified as a habitat for this rare species. However, authorities had never directly spotted, witnessed, or photographed them.

According to the Kim Hy Nature Reserve Management Board, several bears have recently reappeared after many years of absence.

The reserve is continuing to verify the population and implement protective measures.

According to Le Xuan Dieu, Head of the Forest Protection Department in charge of the Conservation Area Management Board, the unit has directly coordinated with the leaders of the communes to disseminate information to the people in the area and directed the Forest Protection Stations to strengthen patrols and inspections, especially in the areas where the langurs appear.

The reserve also puts up signs prohibiting wildlife hunting to educate people not to chase away or harm the langurs. At the same time, the unit has focused on developing a plan to protect this globally endangered species.

It is known that in recent times, the management and protection of special-use forests in Bac Kan in general and Kim Hy Nature Reserve in particular have been carried out very well. As a result, many rare and endangered animal and plant species have gradually reappeared.
