Sharing with sick children
As a treatment center for hundreds of child patients, many of whom suffer from serious illnesses such as cancer or thalassemia, Hue Central Hospital has consistently maintained activities for children on International Children's Day (June 1st) for many years. For many children, gifts or a short musical performance in the hospital corridor not only bring joy but also give them more motivation to continue their arduous treatment journey.
In her treatment room at the Children's Center, Nguyen Bao Ngoc still clutched the teddy bear she had just received as a gift during the Children's Day celebration. She recounted that the long days in the hospital had made her homesick and sad at times, but watching the performances, receiving gifts, and meeting other children in similar situations made her feel much happier. "What I liked most was watching the singing and dancing. Today, I forgot about the pain a little," Ngoc whispered.
Recently, the hospital, in collaboration with Dat Hoa Co., Ltd., awarded 20 financial assistance packages and 140 gifts and cash totaling over 360 million VND to child cancer patients. Amidst the lively music of the event, many parents were moved to see their children smile after long days of needles, medicine, and chemotherapy treatments.
According to Ms. Tran Le Bao Tram, Head of the Social Work and Customer Care Department at Hue Central Hospital, the unit always strives to create more recreational activities and provide emotional support for child patients on June 1st. This year, in addition to cultural programs, the hospital also collaborated with many organizations and philanthropists to give 310 gifts and nearly 450 million VND in cash to children in difficult circumstances who are receiving treatment at the hospital.
Not only at hospitals, this year's Children's Action Month, themed "Happy, Safe, and Steadfast Children in the Digital Age," is also being implemented by the health sector and units throughout Hue City through many practical activities. According to Ms. Phan Minh Nguyet, Deputy Director of the Department of Health, this year's programs focus more on children with special circumstances, children with serious illnesses, and children being cared for in social welfare facilities. Each activity aims to give these children a meaningful summer and to make them feel the support and sharing from the community.
Equipping children with life skills.
Besides facing the risk of accidents and drowning during the summer, many parents are now worried about their children's early exposure to smartphones and social media. Alongside the benefits for learning and entertainment, the online environment also harbors numerous risks such as harmful content, misinformation, and the risk of abuse.
Ms. Tran Thi Hoa, residing in Dan Dien commune, said that both she and her husband are factory workers, so they often leave early and return late, leaving little time to supervise their children. "Sometimes I worry when I see my children constantly on their phones, but I don't know how to manage them completely. Recently, I've heard many stories about teenagers falling in love early and being lured online, which makes me even more anxious," Ms. Hoa shared.
According to the leaders of the Hue City Department of Health, in addition to healthcare services, the department will coordinate with local authorities to strengthen the organization of life skills classes, self-protection skills, prevention of abuse, and guidance for children to participate in a safe digital environment. Many summer activities such as military training camps, talent classes, martial arts, music , and rhythmic gymnastics will also be organized to create more healthy playgrounds for children during the summer break.
According to Ms. Phan Minh Nguyet, given the recent number of tragic drowning incidents, the health sector continues to prioritize accident and injury prevention for children. In addition to increasing personnel, medicines, and emergency equipment at medical facilities, free swimming lessons and first aid training for the community are also maintained, especially in areas with many rivers, lakes, and streams.
Activities dedicated to children on June 1st not only bring joy to the little ones but also contribute to creating a safe and healthy living environment for children to develop physically, mentally, and in life skills in the digital age.
