Profession born from the land, beauty from the heart

The flower and ornamental plant growing industry in Tri Yeu has a history of decades but developed most strongly in the period 1980 - 1990 when the bonsai and bonsai movement spread widely. From barren fields, the people here creatively transformed them into nurseries and art gardens with many unique tree shapes and forms.

Peach blossom and kumquat trees associated with spring and traditional Tet have become the main products of the village. Tri Yeu peach blossom tree stands out with its strong shape, even flower buds, and bright pink petals. People apply many techniques to create unique tree shapes such as dragon peach, flying peach, and mini bonsai. Kumquat trees are popular for their round shape, heavy fruit, and dark green leaves symbolizing wealth and luck. Many households are also creative with La Han pine, laurel, ancient banyan, and bonsai in ceramic pots, combined with miniature rockery and mini waterfalls, turning each product into a true work of art.

From barren fields, Tri Yeu people creatively converted them into nurseries and ornamental gardens that bring high economic value.

Every December, Tri Yeu puts on a festive atmosphere. The whole village is bustling with the sound of pruning, the exchange between customers and sellers, and trucks carrying peach and kumquat trees to all over the North and South. The products not only serve the people of Hai Phong but are also available in Hanoi, Quang Ninh, Nam Dinh and many other provinces and cities.

The village has about 90 hectares of land specializing in growing ornamental plants, divided into 3 areas: the main area (converted from agricultural land), the auxiliary area and the nursery area. Almost every household here owns several hundred to several thousand square meters of garden. For Tri Yeu people, growing plants is not only a livelihood but also a part of their unique culture, showing sophistication in care, shaping, and putting their soul into each product.

The craft village community always maintains a spirit of close cohesion. Households regularly share techniques, organize skill competitions, and beautiful tree competitions during spring festivals. Thanks to that, the craft is continuously taught and renewed according to market trends.

To preserve and promote traditional values, in 2024, the project "Supporting the management, exploitation and development of the collective brand of Tri Yeu Village Ornamental Plants" will be officially implemented. This is an important step, creating a foundation for sustainable development of Tri Yeu Ornamental Plants products in the context of integration.

Chaired by the Dang Cuong Commune Farmers' Association (now An Duong Ward Farmers' Association) - the direct owner of the brand, the project aims to preserve the quintessence of traditional crafts; at the same time, elevate ornamental plant products in a modern, branded direction.

In fact, in the past, many households produced ornamental plants mainly based on experience, each person did it on their own, resulting in inconsistent product quality and a difficult-to-compete brand. The project was born to create a fundamental change, each product of Tri Yeu village not only has artistic value but is also associated with collective reputation.

Many activities were carried out such as building basic standards for the key product of peach blossom trees, compiling technical manuals, training on brand usage, organizing training on traceability, developing a communication and promotion system, etc.

These steps help strengthen brand value and improve production and business capacity for the people. “Previously, we made bonsai trees mainly based on word of mouth experience. Now that we have a collective brand, people are trained and guided in techniques, and there is a common set of standards, so the products are more uniform and customers trust them more,” said Mr. Do Dinh Dang, a long-time artisan of the village.

The highlight of the project is the promotion of community. The collective brand does not belong to an individual but is the common property of the whole village. Thanks to that, households are encouraged to connect and cooperate, instead of competing on a small scale. Awareness of preserving the common brand is also significantly enhanced.

From a place of producing ornamental plants, Tri Yeu now has full potential and advantages to develop craft village tourism. Visitors can stroll in the green garden space, admire the art of pruning, and listen to artisans tell stories about each peach tree and kumquat pot.

On the occasion of Tet, the whole village is as brilliant as a giant spring flower festival, bringing unforgettable experiences to visitors. This is the potential for Hai Phong to develop craft village tourism associated with traditional culture. When products are protected by collective trademarks, craft villages have more advantages in promoting their image, attracting visitors and expanding the market.

Demonstration models, vocational training classes, and bonsai competitions will be held regularly, both to train the next generation and to improve skills. At the same time, the craft village will promote participation in domestic and international bonsai fairs and exhibitions to affirm its position.
