The recently announced Global Peace Index shows that Vietnam is in the top 10 most peaceful countries/territories in Asia - Pacific and ranked top 3 in Southeast Asia.

Conducted by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the index ranks 163 independent countries and territories according to criteria including social security and safety; the extent of ongoing domestic and international conflict; and the degree of militarization.

"The key to building peace in times of conflict and instability is Positive Peace, which is the attitudes, institutions and structures that create and sustain peaceful societies," the Global Peace Index report said, emphasizing: "Positive peace is strongly correlated with higher GDP growth, lower interest rates, social well-being and better resilience to shocks."

Accordingly, Vietnam is in the green zone of the 62 most peaceful countries/territories in the world, at position 38 with 1,721 points, up 1 place compared to last year, equal to Poland. In Asia - Pacific alone (excluding the Middle East), the top 10 are: New Zealand, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea and East Timor. The following group includes: Laos, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, China, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, North Korea, Myanmar...

The Nordic country of Iceland, famous for its volcanoes, hot springs and unique majestic landscapes, has once again been named the most peaceful country in the world by the Global Peace Index.

The remaining countries in the top 10 include Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, Switzerland, Singapore, Portugal, Denmark, Slovenia and Finland.

The 2025 report said: "The world is facing a crisis of violent conflict. There have been 59 conflicts between states since 2023, the highest number since the end of World War II."

The US ranks low in the index, at 128th, below Honduras, Bangladesh and Uganda. This is largely due to its high level of militarisation, which places the US – by that measure – in the bottom quartile of the index, close to North Korea (149), Israel (155), Ukraine (162) and Russia (163).
