Model of growing melons in greenhouses for high economic efficiency

Recently, the model of growing melons in greenhouses, applying high-tech agriculture has been successfully implemented in some communes of Dong Thap province, contributing to increasing the income of local people. In Long Binh commune, the model of growing melons in greenhouses of Mr. Tran Thanh Tung, residing in Loi An hamlet, has brought high economic efficiency. He is also a good farmer and businessman at the provincial level with this model.

BOLDLY APPLY TECHNOLOGY IN PRODUCTION

Faced with the complex developments of climate change, Loi An hamlet, Long Binh commune is affected by saltwater intrusion every year in the dry season, so farmers' cultivation often faces many risks and challenges. Realizing this, Mr. Tung researched and converted 1,000 m2 of rice land to fruit trees, however, productivity and profits did not meet expectations.

So Mr. Tung continued to research, regularly watched newspapers, radio, news, and found out which models were suitable for the soil conditions of the area that was often saline in the dry season; at the same time, he joined groups to visit high-tech agricultural models, including the model of growing melons in greenhouses organized by the agricultural sector.

From there, Mr. Tung realized that the model of growing melons in greenhouses could be applied in his homeland because of its ability to withstand weather conditions and give high productivity.

With the enthusiastic support and guidance from technical staff of the Agriculture sector, in 2023, Mr. Tung boldly invested in building a greenhouse to grow melons on an area of over 1,000 m².

The model is equipped with synchronous elements of modern agriculture such as: Advanced technology automatic irrigation system; using coconut fiber growing medium instead of traditional soil, creating an optimal clean environment for melons to grow; installing anti-insect nets and applying a strict closed production process to effectively prevent pests and diseases, bringing high and stable income to growers.

Agricultural engineer Tran Phuc Thinh said that growing melons in greenhouses allows farmers to have almost absolute control over micro-environmental factors, including: Temperature, humidity and light, helping plants grow evenly according to the correct cycle; minimizing the negative impact of erratic weather and the spread of diseases.

In particular, applying biological progress by using the growth regulator Cytokinin during the pollination and development of melon plants helps the quality of melons to be delicious, sweet, crispy and fragrant.

Not only bringing economic efficiency, the model also contributes to environmental protection by using only organic biological fertilizers, ensuring safe and clean products, protecting the health of both growers and consumers, aiming at producing clean and safe agricultural products.

HIGH ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY

The advantage of melons is that they have a stable consumption market, thanks to the delicious quality of the fruit, its appearance, bright color, and meeting quality standards; customers are supermarkets and companies that order melon products at a stable price of 30,000 - 48,000 VND/kg, the weight of the fruit is from 1.5 - 2.5 kg/fruit. Each crop lasts about 70 - 80 days, after deducting costs, Mr. Tung earns a profit of about 50 million VND/crop.

Long Binh Commune Farmers' Association members visited Mr. Tung's family's melon model.

This profit level is considered many times higher than growing rice or other vegetables, affirming the position of high-tech agriculture in improving farmers' livelihoods.

Mr. Tung concluded that the model of growing melons in greenhouses is a completely suitable direction for farmers in the context of climate change. Growing melons is not too complicated, mainly the investment capital, if persistent, the model of growing melons will bring the desired results.

In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to the selection of varieties and learn more about scientific and technical advances on the Internet. In addition, using drip irrigation also provides nutrients from fertilizers and water to the roots of plants, meeting each stage of plant growth and not wasting irrigation water.

In particular, not only enriching his family, Mr. Tung's melon growing model also contributes to creating jobs for 4 rural workers participating in daily work in greenhouses with an income of 250,000 - 300,000 VND/day.

Head of the Economic Department of Long Binh Commune, Le Ngoc Long, said: "The model of growing melons in greenhouses of Mr. Tran Thanh Tung's household is very effective and suitable for the locality's orientation of developing high-tech agriculture.

Investing in greenhouses helps limit the impact of weather, control pests and diseases well, reduce production costs and improve the quality and productivity of melons. Through actual monitoring, the model brings a stable and much higher income than the traditional growing method. The Economic Department highly appreciates and encourages the replication of this model in the commune in the coming time."

With the model of growing melons in greenhouses with high economic efficiency for many years, Mr. Tran Thanh Tung has been recognized as a good farmer in production and business at the provincial level. This is also the model that the provincial agricultural sector and Farmers' Associations of other communes have chosen to organize delegations to visit and learn from in recent times.

It can be said that the model of growing melons in greenhouses of farmer Tran Thanh Tung is a clear demonstration of the spirit of daring to think, daring to do, and boldly applying high technology to agricultural production of farmers. Thereby, it has opened up a new direction in agricultural production in Long Binh commune, contributing to diversifying local agricultural products.
