Ha Tinh province and the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group will agree on solutions to develop the most optimal plan for the Thach Khe iron ore mining and processing project to submit to the Politburo and the Government.
On the afternoon of July 3rd, Provincial Party Secretary Hoang Trung Dung, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vo Trong Hai, and Chairman of the Board of Members of the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group (TKV) Ngo Hoang Ngan jointly chaired a meeting to discuss and agree on solutions for the Thach Khe iron ore mining and processing project to advise the Government . Also attending the working session were Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Tran The Dung, General Director of TKV Dang Thanh Hai, members of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, and leaders of departments, agencies, units, and localities. |
The leaders of Ha Tinh province participated in the meeting.
The Thach Khe iron ore mining and processing project is invested in by Thach Khe Iron Company (TIC), a subsidiary of TKV.
The project has ore reserves of over 544 million tons, considered the largest iron ore mine in Southeast Asia, accounting for half of the country's total iron ore reserves. The project has a total investment capital of over 14,500 billion VND after adjustments, divided into two phases.
Members of the Vietnam Coal and Mineral Industry Group attended the meeting.
In September 2009, the project began testing the technology and removing the overburden. However, the overburden removal process encountered several shortcomings in the technical design and mining technology, and faced financial difficulties. By November 2011, the project had to be temporarily suspended for a reassessment of the technical design and a restructuring of shareholders.
To date, the project still has many shortcomings and does not meet the conditions for continued implementation; it also poses many potential risks and safety concerns during its execution.
Professor and Academician Nguyen Huy My analyzed the issues that formed the scientific basis for halting the project.
After hearing TKV's information on the project's current status and proposed intermediate solutions for continued implementation, the delegates and scientists focused on analyzing the project's legal basis, scientific validity, and practical effectiveness.
In particular, there are potential consequences and impacts on the environment, society, and people's lives if the project continues to be implemented.
Mr. Ngo Hoang Ngan, Chairman of the Board of Members of TKV, delivered a speech at the meeting.
Speaking at the meeting, Chairman of the Board of Members of TKV Ngo Hoang Ngan stated that the project must be studied and viewed comprehensively; and expressed his hope that the enterprise and the local authorities would agree on a plan to resolve the issues and ensure a balance of interests.
Concluding the meeting, Provincial Party Secretary Hoang Trung Dung emphasized that the provincial leadership is deeply concerned about the potential consequences of continuing to implement the Thach Khe iron ore mining and processing project.
Provincial Party Secretary Hoang Trung Dung concluded the meeting.
Because the Thach Khe iron mine is located near the center of Ha Tinh City, close to the coast (at least 300m away), and the mining plans proposed by TKV (Vietnam Coal and Mineral Group) are not truly convincing, the provincial leaders have proposed that the Government terminate mining operations. Regarding the resolution of some outstanding issues, the provincial leaders committed to working with TKV to develop the most optimal plan to submit to the Government.
Based on the opinions of the delegates, the leaders of Ha Tinh and TKV agreed to discuss solutions to develop the most optimal plan for the Thach Khe iron ore mining and processing project to submit to the Politburo and the Government in the near future.
On this occasion, the Provincial Party Secretary also thanked the corporation for its attention to and implementation of many social welfare activities in Ha Tinh province over the past period.
