Synchronizing solutions to reduce power losses

(Baohatinh.vn) - Faced with increasing load pressure and complex extreme weather conditions, Ha Tinh Power Company is implementing a comprehensive range of technical, operational, and digital management solutions to reduce power losses and improve power supply reliability.

Reducing power losses is not just a technical task, but has become a continuous requirement throughout the entire production and business operation of Ha Tinh Power Company. From management to on-site implementation, all subordinate units are required to "monitor data and stay on-site," proactively detecting and addressing any potential risks of power loss early on.

The results achieved in the first few months of the year show that this direction is proving effective. In the first four months of the year, the company's commercial electricity loss rate reached 5.33%, a decrease of 0.96% compared to the same period in 2025 and 0.5% lower than the target set by the Northern Power Corporation.

One of the highlights of Ha Tinh Power Company's power loss reduction strategy is the strong application of digital technology and remote metering data in operational management.

Duc Tho Power Company manages over 248 km of medium-voltage lines, 736 km of low-voltage lines, and 264 substations. Data analysis is carried out in parallel with field inspections to closely monitor all potential loss points.

Mr. Tran Van Nam, Head of Duc Tho Power Company, stated: “The unit focuses on optimizing the operation of capacitor banks, cleaning insulators using hotline technology, addressing grid defects, and strictly controlling the upstream metering system. In the low-voltage grid, phase balancing, load distribution, and assessment of transformer load levels are carried out regularly to minimize losses. Thanks to the synchronized implementation of these solutions, the unit now only has 29 public transformer stations with a loss rate exceeding 5%. In the first four months of the year, the electricity loss rate of Duc Tho Power Company decreased by 1.46% compared to the same period last year and was 1.19% lower than the assigned plan.”

While the lowland areas focus on optimizing operations, the mountainous region of Huong Khe faces more challenges in reducing power losses due to its vast terrain, dispersed population, and large power supply radius. Furthermore, extreme weather conditions such as thunderstorms, lightning, and prolonged heatwaves frequently put pressure on the power grid. At times, the loss rate on line 371 E18.8 increased by 3.3%, forcing Huong Khe Power Company to implement several urgent solutions to control operations.

Huong Khe Power Company is clearing vegetation along the power line corridors to reduce the risk of incidents caused by trees colliding with power lines.

Mr. Pham Luong Trung, Head of Huong Khe Power Company, said: "The unit has strengthened its rapid response forces to closely monitor the scene, focusing on identifying areas with high losses to analyze the causes and resolve them completely. Operation and management teams are simultaneously deploying phase balancing, load balancing, load review, metering system inspection, and optimizing operating methods. At the same time, the unit is focusing on clearing vegetation along power lines to reduce the risk of incidents caused by trees colliding with power lines. In addition, Huong Khe Power Company is promoting the application of thermal cameras to inspect equipment during peak hours. This solution allows for early detection of poor contact points or abnormal heat emission locations on the power grid, thereby enabling timely handling before incidents or major losses occur."

Not only in the distribution grid, but also in the 110kV grid, significant positive results have been achieved in reducing power losses thanks to the effective combination of infrastructure investment and system operation optimization. In 2026, Ha Tinh Power Company effectively implemented new investment projects, especially the successful energization of three 110kV outgoing lines from the 220kV Vung Ang substation. This project helped reduce the load on existing lines and improve the stability of the transmission system.

Besides technical solutions, Ha Tinh Power Company also focuses on managing electricity trading to minimize non-technical losses. Subordinate power companies strengthen inspection and supervision of electricity trading activities; regularly review post-metering systems; analyze remote metering data and closely monitor unusual fluctuations in electricity consumption.

Furthermore, the effective utilization of the MDMS remote metering system and the PMIS technical management software helps to provide early warnings of load anomalies, assisting the power industry in quickly identifying customers at risk of violating electricity usage regulations. In the first four months of the year, the company detected and handled 17 cases of electricity usage violations, a decrease of 3 cases compared to the same period last year.

According to Mr. Pham Viet Thang, Deputy Director of Ha Tinh Power Company: Reducing power loss is not only a core technical indicator but also a "measure" reflecting the operational management capacity of each subordinate unit.

Forecasts indicate continued widespread heatwaves and a surge in electricity demand in the coming period. The Ha Tinh Power Company requires its units to continue closely monitoring the situation on the ground, assigning specific targets to each department and individual; and simultaneously implementing comprehensive technical, operational, and business solutions, determined to achieve and surpass the target of reducing electricity losses in 2026.
