Iranian state media confirmed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei received Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, but did not give the time of the meeting.
Hamas leader Haniyeh, who has been residing in Qatar and Turkey since 2019, "briefed Khamenei on the latest developments in the Gaza Strip" as well as in the West Bank, Iran's Tasnim news agency reported today.
Iran's supreme leader praised the "steadfast and resilient spirit of the Gaza people" and expressed regret over Israel's actions "directly supported by Washington and some Western countries," the report added.

Without giving details of when the meeting took place, Iran's state news agency said Khamenei "underlined Tehran's consistent policy" of supporting the fight against Zionism.
Iran has said it supports Hamas but played no role in the group's surprise attack on Israel in October.

Khamenei last week called on Muslim countries to stop trading with Israel, including oil exports, in protest at the offensive on the Gaza Strip. He criticized Western governments such as the UK, France and the US for being “anti-Palestinian,” reminding the Muslim world not to forget who is pressuring the people of the Gaza Strip, “not just Israel.”
