A new report from TF International Securities analyst Ming-chi Kuo suggests that users may soon see the emergence of more affordable Copilot+ PC systems thanks to the introduction of the new Snapdragon chip.

Will the Copilot+ PC laptop, priced from $599, be available later this year?

According to Kuo, the new Snapdragon chip will be a budget version of the Snapdragon X series, targeting mainstream devices priced between $599 and $799. The chip has the internal codename "Canim" and is expected to be manufactured by TSMC using a 4nm process. Copilot+ PC laptops equipped with the new chip are likely to launch in Q4 2024.

Canim is said to deliver ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) power of 40 TOPS, slightly less than the 45 TOPS offered by the Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus. If the reports are accurate, this means devices equipped with the new chip will meet Microsoft's Copilot+ standard, which requires laptops to have NPUs powerful enough to handle over 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS).

Mr. Kuo did not reveal any additional details about Canim, including core configuration, CPU specifications, clock speeds, connectivity features, or I/O options. However, since it is cheaper than the top-of-the-line chips, it will be interesting to see which features Qualcomm cuts to differentiate its budget-friendly product line from the flagship.

Those who want to get their hands on a Copilot+ PC early can now find systems from Dell, HP, Acer, Asus, Samsung, and Lenovo, which will begin shipping this week. Microsoft is also offering two new Copilot+ PC models: the Surface Laptop and the Surface Pro. All of these devices come with a Snapdragon X Elite or X Plus chip and start at $999.

In his report, Kuo also delivered bad news for Android fans: the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor will be significantly more expensive than its predecessor, with an increase of approximately 25-30%. This will cost device manufacturers around $190-$200, and it's likely that consumers will be the victims of this price increase as smartphone prices will also rise.
