Latvia has a new government.

On May 28, the Latvian Parliament elected a new center-right government, weeks after the previous ruling coalition collapsed.

On May 28, the Latvian parliament elected a new center-right government, weeks after the previous ruling coalition collapsed in a dispute over Ukrainian drones that strayed into Latvian territory.

With 66 votes in favor in the 100-seat parliament, MPs approved the appointment of 47-year-old politician Andris Kulbergs as Prime Minister of Latvia until the parliamentary elections scheduled for October 3rd. The new four-party ruling coalition is expected to maintain a firm majority in parliament and continue its pro-European Union (EU) and pro-NATO policies. The coalition parties also emphasized the need to strengthen the military and protect the borders of this nation of 1.8 million people.

Previously, on May 14, Evika Silina announced her resignation as Prime Minister after losing support from the Progressive Party, a key partner in the ruling coalition. Silina accused Defense Minister Andris Spruds, a Progressive Party member who also resigned on May 10, of being too slow in deploying anti-UAV defense systems when two Ukrainian UAVs strayed into Latvia on May 7. Following Silina's resignation, on May 16, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics announced he had tasked Kulbergs, a member of parliament from the opposition United List, with forming a new government.
