He called on the international community to increase support for the Democratic Republic of Congo, amid a continued rise in suspected cases and deaths, and a very high risk of the disease spreading further.
Speaking to reporters in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the WHO Director-General affirmed that the international community is working to support the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo in responding to the epidemic. However, he stressed the need for more international support, as well as the involvement of the local community, including overcoming mistrust and combating misinformation.
Tedros also urged countries to reconsider measures they have imposed on travel restrictions or border closures with the Democratic Republic of Congo due to concerns about the Ebola outbreak. According to the WHO leader, this could further complicate the response and hinder the transparency and cooperation necessary to control the disease.
According to data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, less than half a month since the Ebola outbreak began, the Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded at least 1,077 suspected cases, including 246 deaths. In neighboring Uganda, health officials have also confirmed 9 cases, including 1 death.
According to the WHO, the mortality rate in the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo ranges from 30% to 50%, a level considered particularly serious.
