Weightlifter Le Van Cong won the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games in weightlifting, bringing home the first medal for the Vietnamese Paralympic team.
On the afternoon of September 4th ( Hanoi time), Le Van Cong competed in the weightlifting event at the Paris Paralympic Games 2024, in the 49kg category, and won the Bronze Medal.
Before competing at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, Le Van Cong held the world record in the 49kg category with a lift of 183.5kg, set at the 2017 World Championships in Mexico.
Le Van Cong wins a medal at his third consecutive Olympic Games.
At the same time, the weightlifter born in 1984 also holds the Paralympic record with a performance of 183kg, helping him win a historic gold medal for Vietnamese Paralympic sports at Rio 2016 (Brazil).
However, Cong suffered a serious shoulder muscle injury which significantly affected his ability to compete.
In his competition at Paris 2024, the 40-year-old weightlifter from Ha Tinh successfully lifted 171kg in his first attempt.
On his third attempt (he was unsuccessful on his second attempt at 176kg), Le Van Cong decided to increase the weight by 10kg to 181kg, in order to compete for the gold medal.
Le Van Cong was unfortunately unsuccessful and had to settle for the bronze medal.
With this result, he became the first Vietnamese Paralympic athlete to win a medal at Paris 2024.
In addition, Le Van Cong also made history by winning his third consecutive Paralympic medal, following his gold medal at Rio 2016 and silver medal at Tokyo 2020.
Omar Qarada of Jordan won the gold medal with a lift of 181kg, while Abdullah Kayapinar of Türkiye won the silver medal.
Kayapinar and Qarada then increased the weight to 184kg and 185kg respectively, aiming to break the world record held by Van Cong, but both were unsuccessful.
