The Philippine Volleyball Federation has been unexpectedly suspended.

A shock hit the Philippine volleyball scene late on May 29th (Vietnam time), when the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) decided to suspend the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PNVF).

Late on May 29th, the FIVB decided to suspend the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PNVF), the governing body of Philippine volleyball, due to scandals that have arisen within the federation in recent times.

This decision comes a day after the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) announced it would freeze all financial support for the PNVF.

There are several reasons behind PSC's decision, including their inability to organize a qualified women's team to participate in the 2026 AVC Nations Cup (the upcoming AVC Cup in the Philippines), poor management leading to the withdrawal of many star players from the teams, and financial controversies.

PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio pointed out these issues and demanded that PNVF address them before continuing to provide financial support.

But on the evening of May 29, the FIVB issued a statement: "In accordance with Article 13.1.1 of the FIVB Disciplinary Regulations, the FIVB Board of Directors is compelled to immediately suspend the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF)."

This decision was made following serious concerns about governance and numerous allegations of violations of the FIVB Code of Ethics, which are currently under investigation by the FIVB's independent Ethics Committee.

Despite the FIVB's ongoing diplomatic efforts to find a sustainable path for Philippine volleyball, the suspension is deemed necessary to protect the sport, ensure athletes are prioritized, and maintain long-term development commitments for volleyball in the Philippines.

The FIVB stated that it would establish an interim committee to temporarily oversee the activities of the PNVF in accordance with Article 1.9.1 of the FIVB's general statutes.

The immediate priority of this interim committee is to support the Philippine national teams in the coming period, as well as to successfully organize the 2026 Women's VNL.

The Philippines will host one of the stages of the 2026 FIVB Nations League (VNL) women's season, as well as the 2026 AVC Cup - a tournament featuring the Vietnamese women's volleyball team.

In its announcement, the FIVB made no mention of the AVC Cup, a lower-tier version of the VNL. The 2026 AVC Cup will take place from June 6 to 14 in Canada. Host nation Philippines is in Group A, while Vietnam is in Group B.

In recent years, the Philippines has emerged as a force challenging the "two-horse" dominance between Vietnam and Thailand.

In terms of organization, the Philippines successfully hosted the 2025 Men's Volleyball World Championship, where their team performed brilliantly in the group stage.

Following this tournament, Philippine volleyball was expected to make a breakthrough with modern facilities and significant investment. But then this incident dealt a heavy blow to those plans.

Although FIVB did not make an announcement regarding the AVC Cup, they did issue a pledge to "protect the integrity of Philippine volleyball at all levels."
