Recent research by scientists at Lanzhou University in Gansu Province, Northwest China, shows that the probiotic bacterium limosilactobacillus fermentum GR-3, derived from a traditional local fermented food, has the ability to promote apoptosis (programmed cell death) in colon tumor cells and inhibit their growth.
Professor Li Xiangkai, the lead researcher, explained that probiotic bacteria such as Lactobacillus GR-3 can specifically target the tumor environment while also regulating the gut microbiota.
The research team successfully isolated Lactobacillus GR-3, a bacterial strain with potent antioxidant properties. Based on these findings, the team explored the potential of Lactobacillus GR-3 in preventing colon cancer through its effects on the gut microbiota and the host's immune system.
The results showed that Lactobacillus GR-3 significantly reduced the growth of colon tumors in mice and demonstrated a positive therapeutic effect.
