US launches "self-defense" attack in Iran amid advancing negotiations.

The US military has just announced that it conducted "self-defense" attacks on several targets in southern Iran, amid US President Donald Trump's assertion that negotiations regarding Iran are showing positive signs.

According to a statement from the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on May 25, the attacks targeted missile launch sites and several ships allegedly attempting to lay mines. CENTCOM spokesman Captain Tim Hawkins said the operations were conducted “to protect U.S. troops from threats from Iranian forces,” while emphasizing that Washington remains “restraining during the ongoing ceasefire.”

In a related development, US President Donald Trump said on the same day that any agreement to end the conflict with Iran would need to include an expansion of the Abraham Accords, the framework agreement promoted by the US during his first term to normalize relations between Israel and Arab nations.

According to the US leader, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, and Jordan should join this agreement at this stage. Previously, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were the first countries to sign the Abraham Accords in 2020. President Trump emphasized that after prolonged diplomatic efforts by the US, the countries involved need to simultaneously participate in this cooperation mechanism to strengthen regional stability.

However, Trump's proposal faces several challenges. Saudi Arabia continues to insist that normalization of relations with Israel can only be advanced if there is a clear roadmap toward the establishment of a Palestinian state. Pakistan also maintains its position of not yet establishing diplomatic relations with Israel.

The timing and format of a comprehensive agreement with Iran remain unclear. President Trump even suggested that Tehran could potentially join the Abraham Accords in the future if the parties reach a consensus.

The Abraham Accords are a series of diplomatic, economic , and security agreements promoted under US influence during President Trump's first term. Initially signed between Israel and the UAE and Bahrain, they later expanded to include Sudan, Morocco, and more recently, Kazakhstan. These agreements are seen as efforts to promote cooperation and stability in the Middle East and North Africa.
