However, Marcos Llorente scored in injury time of the first half to give Diego Simeone's side hope, before scoring again in the 81st minute to bring the Liverpool vs Atletico battle back to a tie.
And just when everyone thought the match would end in a 2-2 draw, captain Van Dijk made the difference, securing a dramatic 3-2 victory for Liverpool against Atletico, with a stunning header from a corner kick taken by Dominik Szoboszlai in the 90+2 minute.
According to Opta, with this valuable goal, Van Dijk has now scored 25 headed goals for Liverpool, six more than any other defender in the top five European leagues, since his Anfield debut in January 2018.

Notably, in a moment of extreme excitement among the Anfield crowd, when the cameras panned to Diego Simeone, the Atletico manager was seen losing his composure, heading towards a group of Liverpool fans and getting into a physical altercation with them, creating a chaotic scene.
Although he was later pulled away from the crowd by members of the Atletico coaching staff, Simone did not stop, gesticulating wildly and receiving a direct red card.
Perhaps unable to accept the harsh reality of his team's painful defeat and the red card, the Argentinian coach even exchanged words with both the main referee and the fourth official.
After the match, Diego Simone admitted that his behavior was completely wrong but stressed that he could no longer tolerate the insults from Liverpool fans throughout the game.
