Along the rivers and canals, big and small, in Ca Mau , the image of a small boat with the cry “Forging knives here, selling new knives here” has become familiar to many people. That is the boat of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan (55 years old, from Hau Giang province) and his wife, who have been drifting on the river for more than 20 years to keep the fire of blacksmithing alive.
Wherever the boat docks, people, especially children, gather to watch the process of making a sharp, beautiful knife and listen to the sound of hammers and knife sharpening. Mr. Nhan confided: “Blacksmithing depends on the eyes, as long as the eyes are still bright, we can continue to work. Although the eyes are a bit dim, staying at home is very sad, but going out is fun.” For Mr. Nhan and his wife, blacksmithing is not only a way to make a living but also a love and devotion to the traditional profession of their ancestors.
