On August 2, information from the Management Board of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park ( Quang Tri ) confirmed that the Truong Son rock rat species has just been discovered in the natural environment thanks to a modern camera trap system deployed by the park in coordination with international conservation organizations since the end of 2024.
It is known that the Truong Son rock rat is an endemic rodent of the Diatomyidae family, once considered extinct since the Miocene period (about 11 million years ago). In 2016, researchers recorded the existence of this species for the first time in the limestone mountains of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, but only in the form of specimens.

Recently, for the first time, images of Truong Son rock rats living in the wild were clearly recorded while foraging at night in some areas of Phong Nha - Ke Bang. This discovery has stimulated the curiosity of scientific researchers.
A total of 424 images of rock rats were recorded from 10 camera trap stations located in the strictly protected area of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. The success of this camera trap program is considered a turning point in biodiversity conservation efforts in Vietnam.
