Confusion over titles and idols.

Recently, the phenomenon of everyone becoming an "idol" thanks to social media platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc., has caused concern among many people.

"Nowadays, it seems like anyone who picks up a microphone becomes a singer" - a young singer made this statement a while ago when starting their singing career.

Internet sensations

The development of social media platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc., alongside decent content, is worrying because many "internet phenomena" have become idols of young people due to their nonsensical and incomprehensible behavior. Examples include: stuttering, silly appearance, vulgar language, swearing, sloppiness, selling counterfeit goods, etc. – these trivial things can all help someone become an "idol" of the youth.

The idol culture among young people is also becoming more worrying due to unwavering fanaticism, such as donating hundreds of millions of dong to idols, and defending idols even when they reveal themselves to be lazy, fraudulent, or dissolute individuals.

"Just pick up a microphone and you're a singer" - this seemingly arrogant statement from a young singer starting their career seems to have some basis. Nowadays, you don't need to sing well, you don't need vocal training; you just need to invest in an attractive image and attract a certain audience to be called a singer.

Numerous self-proclaimed titles such as "king," "queen," "princess," and "prince" appear everywhere, from fashion models to stage performers, comedians, and film actors, overwhelming audiences. Undeniably, these self-proclaimed titles have become a springboard for unknown figures to quickly rise to prominence in Vietnamese showbiz.

Singer Dam Vinh Hung is often referred to as the "King of Vietnamese Music." This title is a compliment to the achievements he has garnered in his career. Regarding this, singer Dam Vinh Hung asserts that this is not a title he bestowed upon himself, but rather one given to him by a journalist.

According to experts, rectifying and eliminating the obsession with fame and the proliferation of titles in the showbiz industry is the responsibility of the entire society, and it especially requires the joint efforts of mainstream media outlets in "purifying" misleading and exaggerated titles and designations so that genuine artists are not harmed.

Competing for the title

According to preliminary statistics for the first six months of the year, the entertainment industry has seen nearly 20 beauty pageants. From now until the end of the year, Vietnamese showbiz will have approximately 60 more new beauty queens, pageant winners, and other beautiful women. Never before have audiences been overwhelmed by having to remember the names of so many beauties emerging from beauty contests as they are now.

In pursuit of fame through beauty pageants, many contestants are also busy with other competitions. A prime example is H'Cúc Êban, who was crowned Miss Eco Vietnam 2022 earlier this year and is now a contestant in the recently concluded Miss Ethnic Groups of Vietnam pageant. Before winning the 2nd Runner-up title at the Miss Supranational pageant, Kim Duyên already held a number of titles from participating in domestic beauty contests such as Top 10 Miss Ao Dai Vietnam 2014 and Miss Elegant Student of Nam Can Tho University 2016.

From college students to businesswomen and ladies from all walks of life, many are willing to enter a beauty pageant to seek a title for themselves. The recent success of Miss Grand International 2021 Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, with her multi-million dollar income, has become an inspiration for many beautiful young women.

In reality, titles like "Queen of the Entertainment Industry," "Queen of Comedy," "Vietnamese Michael Jackson," "Queen of Lingerie," "Vietnamese Taylor Swift," "Princess of Pop," and "Queen of the Catwalk" make singers and artists more valuable. This has led to a scramble for the title of "Queen of Lingerie," with some arguing, "I've only advertised lingerie, so I deserve this title, while the other person only claimed it for themselves without ever being invited to do any lingerie advertising shoots."

"Relevant authorities need to promptly intervene to rectify the chaotic situation of self-proclaimed titles and designations, otherwise it will lead to deviations in socio-cultural development and cause harmful consequences for the country's cultural and artistic fields," suggested Associate Professor Bui Hoai Son, Director of the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts.

According to unofficial sources, authorities will be stepping in to re-evaluate beauty pageants in the coming months. This move has been welcomed as it will help to create a more ethical Vietnamese showbiz scene, at least in preventing the current chaotic use of titles and titles.
