The 2018 general education program has been introduced into the first year of teaching in grade 10 in the 2022-2023 school year.
The new point of this year's general education program can be seen that students do not have to study all subjects. In addition to the compulsory subjects, students will choose elective subjects.
This new point causes many concerns for students and parents. Currently, many students after choosing elective subjects, after the first semester, many students realize that their choice is not suitable for their abilities.
Therefore, many parents whose children are currently in grade 9 and are preparing to enter grade 10 in the 2023-2024 school year are wondering and hesitant about orienting their children.
Regarding this issue, reporters from the Journalist & Public Opinion Newspaper had an interview with Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien, Principal of Kim Lien High School, Hanoi, about related issues and provided advice for parents to refer to in orienting their children's studies when entering high school.

Madam, currently parents whose children are about to enter grade 10 are still wondering about choosing elective subjects for their students, including choosing subjects with natural tendencies such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology and subjects with social tendencies such as Geography, Economic Education and Law. Because, many parents are thinking that, when choosing elective subjects such as Geography, Economic Education and Law, the students' chances of choosing to study at university later will be less than elective subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology. What is your opinion on this issue?
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien: It is true that parents with children entering grade 10 are still wondering about choosing a group of elective subjects for their students. We need to understand that the 2018 General Education Program aims to choose a career based on ability.
Students with abilities, strengths, and weaknesses in a subject should choose that group of subjects (including 4 subjects) combined with the group of subjects, compulsory education content (8 subjects) to create subject combinations that meet the admission requirements for quite diverse professions at university level.
I understand that nowadays, universities also focus on opening more majors suitable for many subject combinations so that students have many suitable choices.
According to current job demands, university is not the only path, students can also learn a trade, or develop their own abilities and talents into future careers.
Subjects such as Economics and Law Education are essential to equip future citizens with life skills. The idea that choosing elective subjects such as Geography, Economics and Law Education will reduce students' chances of choosing to study at university later is, in my opinion, unsatisfactory from many perspectives.
In fact, many students today choose subjects based on feelings and trends, rather than on their strengths and abilities. Can you share some opinions on this issue? In your opinion, is the orientation of students' learning from grade 10 really an important issue that affects their future?
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien: There is a situation where students choose subjects based on their feelings, rarely choosing according to their strengths and abilities. Therefore, I think that students' subject choices need to be thoroughly communicated by schools, posted on the media and fully disseminated to parents and students throughout the admission process.
The Hanoi Department of Education and Training and schools have had a long period of time for parents and students to choose subjects and consider before submitting their applications, enough time for parents and students to consider and decide.
Choosing subjects is mostly agreed upon and discussed between parents and students.
Only a few students choose based on their emotions. This is the first year of implementing the 2018 General Education Program in high schools, so it is inevitable that families will be confused.
Parents and students need to consider the output when choosing subjects, and when choosing, families also need to consider the student's strengths and abilities.
During the learning process, some students found that the chosen subjects were not suitable. The Ministry of Education and Training has issued instructions for students to change their chosen subjects and elective subject clusters.
I think that the orientation of learning for students from grade 10 is an important issue that affects the future of students because the goal of the 2018 general education program emphasizes the development of necessary qualities and abilities of workers, civic personality, self-study and lifelong learning ability, the ability to choose a career suitable to one's abilities, interests, conditions, and circumstances to continue studying, learning a trade or participating in life, and the ability to adapt to changes in the context of the 4.0 industrial revolution.
To achieve the above goal, not only must the program content be changed, teaching and learning methods and approaches, testing and assessment be innovated, but importantly, students must have the right to choose subjects according to their abilities, interests, and career trends.
Therefore, the role of high school in choosing suitable subjects for students is very important and decisive.
When implementing two general education programs in parallel, can you assess some differences between the two programs? If there are still concerns about choosing subjects for students when entering grade 10, how do you share them with parents?
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien: The completely new point in the 2018 General Education Program being implemented is that for the first time, the education sector has presented a model of its future "product".
Specifically, according to the general education program, the education program will form and develop 5 main qualities with 10 core competencies for students. Shift from imparting knowledge to forming qualities and competencies for learners.
The requirements for essential qualities and core competencies are the basis for developing subject programs and educational activities, compiling textbooks and teaching guides, evaluating student educational outcomes and the quality of general education.
The educational content is not as academic as the 2006 General Education Program, but focuses on basic, practical, modern knowledge necessary to build the proposed qualities and capacities.
The educational method will no longer be the traditional one-way knowledge transfer method, where the teacher lectures and the students listen, the teacher reads and the students copy.
According to the new program, teachers are only facilitators and guides for students to discover the meaning of the lesson themselves.
Teachers must organize and motivate students to work, discuss in groups, and express their ideas.
Education is not equal but individualized according to each student's ability. Teaching content is integrated at lower levels and gradually differentiated at higher levels.
The educational program focuses on practice and applying knowledge to solve problems in study and life.
Through methods and forms of educational organization, promote the initiative and potential of each student.
Testing and assessment methods will also change in line with educational goals and methods to support education in achieving its goals. In addition, the new program will include more textbooks and early career guidance education.
The new general education program turns three years of high school into a career orientation phase with many innovations compared to the 2006 program.
The new program also introduces new subjects such as Experiential Activities.
This activity helps to form the main qualities, general competencies and some specific component competencies such as the ability to design and organize activities, career orientation competencies, the ability to adapt to changes in life and other life skills.
I think that choosing subjects in high school is very important and decisive. So parents and students need to consider carefully when choosing.
The Ministry of Education and Training will soon have a document guiding the Graduation Exam and University Admissions.
Therefore, parents and students need to pay attention to learn carefully when the Ministry of Education and Training has a document guiding the graduation exam and university admission. Therefore, parents and students need to pay attention to learn carefully to make the right decision.
Thank you very much!
