Modern Stage People Image
The play "Old Marks" by author Nguyen Thanh Binh is a simple story about President Ho Chi Minh and farmers taking place in the period after the Dien Bien Phu victory in 1954. The play was invested in and staged by the 5B Small Stage Drama Theater and was loved by many audiences thanks to its attractive and engaging content, interweaving past and present details. In particular, Meritorious Artist Thanh Dien's transformation into the image of Uncle Ho was highly appreciated by the audience.

Meritorious Artist Thanh Dien shared: “When I accepted the role, I felt a lot of pressure, first of all because I had to transform into a great character like Uncle Ho. Second, before me, many artists had successfully portrayed the role of Uncle Ho. I spent a lot of time learning and practicing from previous generations of artists on how to express Uncle Ho's character, spirit, warm and friendly voice, gait, appearance, and hand gestures...”. Thanks to this effort, after the play was performed, the male artist was commented to have portrayed Uncle Ho very closely, from his standing posture, gait, voice, hand movements, etc., helping to evoke a lot of feelings and love for Uncle Ho in the hearts of the audience.
Unlike Old Marks, the play Journey to Find a Portrait by the Ho Chi Minh City Drama Theater builds the image of Uncle Ho in a different form. The story takes the audience to the old mangrove forest in the South, a shelter for evacuees and local guerrillas. When they heard that Uncle Ho had passed away, with love and respect, the people secretly built a temple to worship him in the forest using simple mangrove trees and coconut leaves. Because there was no portrait of Uncle Ho, people had to use symbolic images to remember him. Seeing this scene, a group of young people, children of soldiers and civilians in the mangrove forest, came up with the idea of finding a portrait of Uncle Ho to carve into a statue to worship.
Although from beginning to end of the play there was no artist playing the role of Uncle Ho, but based on 3D technology, LED screen projection and gauze, the image of Uncle Ho appeared sparkling, like a bright star illuminating the hearts of enthusiastic children, sharing the same great aspiration of the entire nation: an independent and peaceful country.
Finding the essence of life in films about Uncle Ho
Vietnamese cinema has had many films depicting the image of Uncle Ho. Among them, Childhood Moon by director Ho Ngoc Xum has a special position as the first film about Uncle Ho's childhood. The film is set from 1895 to 1901, when the boy Nguyen Sinh Cung and his parents, Mr. Nguyen Sinh Sac, Mrs. Hoang Thi Loan and his brother Nguyen Sinh Khiem, first came to Hue . Although choosing a familiar way of telling the story, without any major artistic breakthroughs, the film scores points for its closeness, naturalness and richness of emotion. The scene of the boy Nguyen Sinh Cung, not yet 10 years old, wearing white mourning clothes, holding onto his mother's coffin while his younger brother cried miserably, makes viewers feel heartbroken.
Director Ho Ngoc Xum shared that what he was most satisfied with in this project was the depiction of Uncle Ho's childhood - an innocent, normal child with many mischievous pranks like any other child. However, from everyday situations based on observation, intelligence, filial piety, compassion... contributed to nurturing the seeds to create the character and personality of a future leader.
To have those footages, it took a lot of preparation. The film script won third prize in the 2020 Feature Film Script Writing Competition organized by the Department of Cinema. Mr. Nguyen Tien Hung, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Liberation Film Joint Stock Company, said that the details in the film were carefully and meticulously constructed, although there were fictional elements, they were all based on anecdotes about Uncle Ho's life. As for the selected actors, director Ho Ngoc Xum set the first requirement that all of them must have a good background and origin. The roles of the two brothers Nguyen Sinh Cung and Nguyen Sinh Khiem were chosen from more than 200 actors who auditioned.
Childhood Moon has become an important contribution to the film genre depicting the life and revolutionary career of President Ho Chi Minh. The film partly explains the process of forming his virtues inherited from a kind mother who loved her husband and children very much and a father - a Confucian scholar, a patriotic and upright mandarin.
