Tourist arrivals to Japan at all-time high

According to the Japan National Tourism Agency, in 2024, the number of tourists coming to this country will reach 36.87 million, surpassing the record of 31.88 million visitors in 2019, the time before the Covid-19 pandemic.

In December 2024 alone, Japan welcomed 3.49 million foreign tourists. The figure reached an all-time high, surpassing the 3.19 million visitors in November 2024.

Previously, the number of tourists to the land of the rising sun in November 2024 also exceeded the record of 3.31 million in October 2024.

In addition, foreign tourists to Japan are expected to spend 8.14 trillion yen (about $51.8 billion) on accommodation, shopping and other expenses in 2024, surpassing the 2023 record of 5.31 trillion yen for the Japanese tourism industry.

The number of tourists to Japan has increased amid a weakening yen and the reopening of international flights to the country since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Japanese government aims to attract 60 million tourists a year and tourism spending to reach 15 trillion yen by 2030.

The Land of the Rising Sun is working to attract more high-end tourists and encourage foreign visitors to expand their horizons beyond its major cities. However, the Northeast Asian nation is facing a shortage of human resources in the hotel service sector.
