According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, in 2024, the number of tourists visiting the country reached 36.87 million, surpassing the record of 31.88 million in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.
In December 2024 alone, Japan welcomed 3.49 million foreign visitors. This figure reached an unprecedented high, surpassing the 3.19 million visitors recorded in November 2024.
Previously, the number of tourists visiting Japan in November 2024 also surpassed the record of 3.31 million set in October 2024.
Furthermore, in 2024, foreign tourists visiting Japan spent 8.14 trillion Yen (approximately $51.8 billion) on accommodation, shopping, and other expenses. This figure also surpassed the record set in 2023 for Japan's tourism industry, which was 5.31 trillion Yen.
Tourist numbers in Japan have increased amid a weakening yen and the reopening of the country's international flights since the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Japanese government aims to attract 60 million tourists annually and achieve tourism spending of 15 trillion Yen by 2030.
Japan is striving to attract more high-end tourists and encourage foreign visitors to broaden their travel horizons beyond major cities. However, the Northeast Asian nation is facing a labor shortage in the hospitality sector.
