The amount of non-term deposits of banks decreased.

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên22/05/2023

As a bank with a high level of non-term deposits over total customer deposits (CASA) in 2022, MB's financial report for the first quarter of 2023 shows that this ratio has decreased quite rapidly. Total non-term deposits at the end of March 2023 were VND 160,817 billion, down 10.7% compared to the beginning of the year. Accordingly, the CASA ratio decreased from 40.6% to 35.5%. At the end of March, Techcombank 's deposits decreased by 6% compared to the beginning of the year, to VND 124,000 billion. This is the fourth consecutive quarter that this bank has recorded a decrease in CASA, down to 32% instead of 37% in the previous quarter and a record level of 50% in early 2022.

The amount of non-term deposits of customers at banks has decreased.

At Vietcombank , CASA decreased by 7.6%, with non-term deposits reaching VND387,703 billion. The CASA ratio was adjusted from 33.9% to 30.4%. Although the CASA ratio ranked 3rd in the system, in terms of balance, Vietcombank is still the bank with the highest level.

Total non-term deposits at MSB also decreased by VND8,000 billion in the first 3 months of the year, down to nearly VND28,500 billion, equivalent to a decrease of 22%. Accordingly, the CASA ratio decreased from 31.1% at the beginning of the year to 22.6%. At the end of March, the non-term deposit ratio of some banks also decreased, such as ACB also decreased to 20.6% instead of 22.3% at the beginning of the year; Vietinbank from 10% to 18%...

The golden age of the demand deposit rate was from 2020 to the first months of 2022, when the Covid-19 epidemic occurred, people kept money in their accounts (no term) to facilitate payment and investment. Moreover, the savings interest rate for mobilizing VND at this time was low (about 6 - 7%/year), many people transferred money to securities investment accounts, which helped increase the bank CASA rate. From the end of 2022 to the first months of 2023, the savings interest rate on the market increased by 9 - 12%/year, causing the amount of demand deposits to shift from demand to term. By the end of February, deposits of residential customers at banks had increased by VND 314,000 billion, equivalent to an increase of 5.36% compared to the end of 2022, to nearly VND 6.18 million billion.

Furthermore, investment channels such as stocks and real estate are difficult, so people temporarily deposit money to earn interest and wait for opportunities. This partly explains the decline in CASA ratio, which means banks mobilize more capital than before.
