Flight attendant salaries of 10 largest US airlines

In the wake of the pandemic, US airlines like United and Spirit have raised pay for flight attendants and pilots to cope with labor shortages.

While the average salary for flight attendants in the US is around $62,280 a year right after Covid-19, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, salaries can vary depending on the airline and the flight attendant's level of experience.

Some flight attendants have posted their salaries on job search sites like Glassdoor and PayScale to help potential candidates get a better idea of what people in the industry are making. The salaries for the 10 U.S. airlines listed below are the average of all flight attendants surveyed by Glassdoor and PayScale.

United Airlines flight attendants reported earning $34-$38 per hour, with an average of $70,927 per year. This is considered the highest-paying airline in the US. Delta Airlines flight attendants came in second, earning $33-$51 per hour, with an average of $70,182 per year.

The top-paying airline in the top three is American Airlines, where flight attendants earn an average of $41 per hour or about $64,000 per year.

Southwest Airlines flight attendants earn $29 to $35 an hour; an average of $60,512 a year. JetBlue flight attendants earn $21 to $26 an hour; an average of $54,286 a year.

Allegiant Air flight attendants say they earn an average of about $25 an hour; an average of $51,296 a year.

Airlines included in the survey of flight attendant salaries include: Spirit, about $22 an hour, $54,896 a year; Frontier Airlines, $20-26 an hour, $54,531 a year; Alaska Airlines, $27-39 an hour, $56,930 a year; Hawaiian Airlines, $27 an hour, $57,000 a year.

As of March 11, 2023, the average annual salary for a flight attendant in the US is $74,412.

Meanwhile, flight attendants at the world's leading airline Emirates earn $4,128 a month, or nearly $50,000 a year. Flight attendants at Japan Airlines earn $25,000 a year or $12 an hour, 41% lower than the national average for all flight attendants of $38,000 a year. Hard work but many people pursue it

To become a flight attendant in the United States, applicants typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and experience working in customer service. Applicants must meet minimum age requirements, usually 18 or 21; be eligible to work in the United States; have a valid passport; and pass a background check, drug test, etc.

American airlines have a training program for flight attendants that typically lasts 3 to 6 weeks. Typically, candidates will attend 8 hours of training per day for the duration of the program. This training prepares candidates to use airport codes, make PA announcements, perform routine job duties, and handle in-flight emergencies.

Airlines in the US require flight attendants to be US citizens, permanent residents, or have a valid work visa. Generally, applicants must be between 18 and 21 years old, although some airlines have higher minimum age requirements.

However, after the training course, candidates must pass the qualifying round to become flight attendants. It is a fiercely competitive process.
