Plantain (also known as Plantago major, Plantago seed, Su Ma (Tay), Nang Chay Mia (Dao), Xu Ma, Nha En Dut (Thai)). This is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows easily and adapts to many climates.

In Vietnam, plantain grows wild everywhere, from the plains to the mountains, and is even cultivated by people for medicinal purposes or as a vegetable. In traditional medicine, plantain is considered a wholesome herb, sweet in taste, and cooling in nature, with effects such as clearing heat, promoting urination, reducing inflammation, cooling the liver, and supporting the treatment of many common ailments in daily life.

The properties and meridian tropism of plantain:

  • Taste and properties: Plantain has a sweet taste and a cooling nature.
  • Meridian: Enters the Liver, Kidney, and Bladder meridians.

2. Commonly used remedies contain plantain.

Below are some remedies using plantain, as introduced by Dr. Tran Ngoc Que, a specialist in Traditional Medicine and member of the Quang Tri Traditional Medicine Association:

Lesson 1. Treating newly diagnosed hypertension, regulating blood pressure.

Whole plantain plant (excluding roots): 20-30 grams; 500 ml water. Boil down to 400 ml, divide into 2-3 doses and drink throughout the day.

Lesson 2. Treatment of Chronic Glomerulonephritis

The herbal decoction consists of: Plantago major 16g, Imperata cylindrica root 12g, Polyporus umbellatus 8g, Phellodendron amurense 12g, Talc 8g, Coptis chinensis 12g; and 1000ml of water. Boil down to 300ml, divide into 2-3 doses and drink throughout the day. Take one dose per day.

Lesson 3. Diuretics, treating difficulty urinating

Ingredients: 10g plantain seeds (Plantago major), 2g licorice root; 600ml water, decoct until 200ml remains, divide into two doses and drink daily.

Lesson 4. Treating bladder stones

Ingredients: 30g plantain, 30g coin grass (Desmodium gyrans), 30g Houttuynia cordata; 1000ml water. Boil down to 800ml, divide into 4-5 doses to drink throughout the day; use continuously for 7-10 days.

Lesson 5. Treating lung inflammation and persistent cough.

Ingredients: 20-50g of fresh plantain (whole plant, roots removed), 10-15g of fresh rhizome of Iris tectorum (fan-shaped), peeled and thinly sliced; 500ml of water, decoct until 300ml remains, drink 3 times a day.

Lesson 6. Treating Hematuria (Blood in Urine)

Ingredients: 12g plantain leaves, 12g motherwort leaves; 100ml water.

Instructions: Wash thoroughly, crush, add water, squeeze out the juice and drink once a day for 5-7 days.

Lesson 7. Treating Dengue Fever

Ingredients: 50g fresh plantain leaves, 30g kudzu root, 1000ml water.

Instructions: Boil until only 500ml remains, divide into two portions and drink on an empty stomach; continue for 3 days, on the 4th and 5th days drink only once.

Lesson 8. Improving Hair Loss

Ingredients: 100-150g dried plantain leaves; sufficient amount of rice vinegar.

Instructions: Burn plantain leaves to charcoal, mix with vinegar, put in a jar and let it soak for a week, then apply to the area of ​​hair loss.

Lesson 9. Treating long-standing high blood pressure

Ingredients: 30g fresh plantain, 12g motherwort, 20g dried scutellaria, 12g black star anise seeds, 600ml water.

Instructions: Boil the mixture until only 400 ml remains, then divide the decoction into two doses to be taken twice a day, morning and evening.

Lesson 10. Treating Nosebleeds

Ingredients: 30-50g fresh plantain leaves, 50ml filtered water.

Instructions: Wash thoroughly, crush, add water, squeeze out the juice and drink once a day.

Lesson 11: Treating Chronic Diarrhea

Ingredients: Plantain seeds 8g, licorice root 12g, centella asiatica 12g, kudzu root 12g, codonopsis pilosula 12g, chrysanthemum 8g, water 400ml.

Instructions: Boil until only 300 ml remains, divide into 2-3 portions and drink one dose daily for 10-15 days.

Lesson 12. Treating Impetigo in Children

Ingredients: 10-30g young plantain leaves, 50-150g minced pork (depending on age; the older the person, the more).

Instructions: Chop plantain leaves finely, cook them with pork trotters, and feed the child until the symptoms subside.

Lesson 13. Treating Hives and Allergies

Ingredients: 20-30g of plantain (without roots), 20-30g of Sài đất (a type of herb), 10-20g of young fig leaves, 800ml of water.

Instructions: Boil the mixture until it reduces to 600 ml, then divide into 2-3 doses to drink throughout the day.

14. Treating eczema

Ingredients: 50g plantain seeds, sufficient amount of black sesame oil (about 10-15 ml).

Instructions: Roast plantain seeds until black, then grind them into a fine powder. Mix with black sesame oil, store in a jar in the refrigerator, and apply to eczema patches at midday and at night before going to bed.
