In the world of cybersecurity, wipers are considered one of the most dangerous types of malware. According to Kaspersky and Symantec, it can overwrite files, corrupt partition tables, or wipe hard drives.
The difference with ransomware is that wiper does not keep data to return when ransom is paid. Cybersecurity firm Fortinet warns of cases where wipers masquerade as ransomware, but data is permanently destroyed.
The wiper's goal is not money but to cause maximum damage, often in APT attacks. Individual users also risk losing photos, documents, and important information without backups. Kaspersky recommends always backing up your data to minimize the risk of an attack.
