Next week, the first batch of Ruby plums will be exported to Hong Kong at a price of nearly 400,000 VND per kilogram, nearly double the domestic price.

Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Huyen - CEO of Mia Group, said this is the first time the company has exported Ruby plums to Hong Kong after a long period of market research. This is a potential consumption gateway because consumers are very fond of this fruit.

In addition to Hong Kong, Ms. Huyen said that this time the company will also export to old markets such as Singapore, Malaysia and Cambodia. "We will export from now until the end of the season. Each batch, the company plans to export more than 5 tons, of which, the Hong Kong market will export one ton per week," she said.

According to Ms. Huyen, this year the quantity of exported plums will be higher than the same period last year because of the number of early orders. Currently, each kilogram of exported Ruby plums costs more than 370,000-390,000 VND per kilogram (depending on the market), a slight increase compared to the same period last year. This level is nearly double the domestic price (about 230,000 VND per kilogram).

Ruby plums are harvested from ancient plum gardens in Na Ka valley (Moc Chau district, Son La province) - a place known as "the paradise of plums". Every year, many tourists come here to take pictures when the plums bloom and when the fruits are ripe and heavy on the branches.

They are expensive because they are selected more carefully and strictly than regular plums. For plums to meet high standards, gardeners must meet the following requirements: Vietgap and Globalgap certification; planting distance of 5-6 m between trees to fully absorb sunlight, pruning and reducing the number of fruits. In addition, gardeners do not use chemical fertilizers or herbicides and have a certificate of pesticide residue when harvesting.

Plums harvested in the garden will be classified according to quality such as: round, still powdery, just ripe, not bruised at the top, no marks or scratches. Then, the fruit is packaged and sent to the selling points on the same day by air.

Currently, Ruby plums are classified into many sizes, of which, export goods have 2 types: 17-23 fruits per kg and 23-28 fruits per kg.

Mr. Ha Nhu Hue - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Son La province - said that this year the whole province is expected to harvest about 89,000 tons of plums, of which Ruby plums account for 1/3 of the output. "Plum prices this year are stable and remain high, and the quality is also superior to previous years," he said.

According to Mr. Hue, Ruby plum is a product representing the province's agricultural brand. This type is being cultivated systematically, the area is increasing but is strictly controlled according to the correct process and standards. Therefore, they are classified as high-class fruits, bringing high profits to farmers.

The Department's leaders said that this year's plum crop will be exported to 6-7 markets. In addition to the above 4 markets, this type will be exported to Middle Eastern countries.

In addition to export, plums are also sold widely through channels from e-commerce to supermarket chains. "Plum season has begun, domestic and international consumption is forecast to be more vibrant than the same period in previous years," said Mr. Hue.
