Vietnam and Australia officially established diplomatic relations on February 26, 1973. Since then, the two countries have built a strong and enduring relationship with diverse and growing interests.
Currently, Vietnam is considered one of Australia's most important bilateral partners.
Both countries are committed to further developing relations in all areas and promoting an upgraded relationship based on respect for international law, sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and respect for each other's political systems.
The upgrading of relations between Vietnam and Australia to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is a natural and appropriate development, given the level of relationship between the two countries after more than 50 years of building and development.
In October 2024, the two countries signed an Action Plan to implement this partnership for the period 2024-2027. To date, the two sides have coordinated to complete or are on schedule 96% of the 180 action items in this action plan.

Regarding prospects for cooperation between the two countries, Vietnam and Australia still have much untapped potential, especially in areas that Vietnam prioritizes and Australia has strengths in, such as high technology, innovation, clean energy, mining, infrastructure, telecommunications, services, tourism, and high-tech agriculture.
Building on a foundation of strong relations, the State visit to Vietnam by the Governor-General of Australia, Sam Mostyn, and her husband is of great significance, affirming the determination of both countries to continuously strengthen friendly relations and cooperation in all fields, especially political cooperation, after more than a year and a half of establishing a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The visit reflects Australia's consistent policy of valuing and giving high priority to developing relations with Southeast Asia, including Vietnam; it also contributes to strengthening strategic trust between the two countries, contributing to peace, stability and development in the region, as well as mutual understanding and friendship.
Following the welcoming ceremony, President Luong Cuong and Governor-General Sam Mostyn led the high-level delegations of the two countries in talks, assessing the results of cooperation between the two countries in the past and proposing directions for future cooperation. The two leaders will also witness the signing of cooperation documents.
