Lewandowski announces retirement from playing for Poland under coach Michal Probierz
Lewandowski (36 years old) is the top scorer for the Polish national team of all time, having contributed 85 goals in 158 appearances. But recently he caused a shock when he announced that he would retire from playing for the Polish national team under the guidance of head coach Michal Probierz.
Writing on his Instagram page, Lewandowski said: "Considering the current situation and the loss of confidence in the coach, I have decided not to play for the Polish national team again while he (Probierz) is still there. I hope I will still have another chance to play for Poland again in front of the best fans in the world ."
Lewandowski's statement came after the Polish Football Association announced the decision to strip him of the Poland captaincy.
"According to the decision of coach Michal Probierz, Piotr Zielinski will become the new captain of the Polish national team. The coach has personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team and the technical staff about his decision," the organization announced.
Previously, Lewandowski asked not to join the Polish national team in the call-up taking place this June, the reason being that he was "mentally and physically tired" after a fierce season with Barcelona.
Specifically, Lewandowski played 52 matches, scoring 42 goals to help Barcelona win 3 titles, including the La Liga championship this season.
