Ms. LKP, residing in Ninh Hiep hamlet, Bau Nang commune, said that on the morning of April 10, while she was sweeping in front of her son's house in Ninh Thuan hamlet, a young man came by on a motorbike and introduced himself as Trung, a construction worker at a house nearby.
This subject told her that while digging the foundation of the house, he discovered some artifacts including a soldier's outfit, a bunch of bronze bananas and a valuable card and wanted to sell it to her at a cheap price to get money to spend.
Fearing exposure, the subject led Ms. P. to an empty lot next to his house to show her the "antiques" he had. After a period of persuasion, Ms. P. believed the subject and gave him two rings worth one tael of gold (about 10 million VND) in exchange for a bunch of copper bananas.
“When this person opened the trunk and took out the bunch of bananas, she saw that she looked different, and felt very happy. This person kept pointing at her hand, asking her to take the gold she was wearing and give it to her, instead of giving her money. She hesitated a few times and then, for some reason, took off her two rings and gave them to her,” Ms. P. recalled the moment she was tricked into losing a tael of gold in exchange for a bunch of copper bananas.
After bringing the items home, Ms. P.'s husband took the items to check and discovered that his wife had been scammed, so he went to the house under construction (where the subject named Trung introduced when he first approached Ms. P.) to ask for information about the subject.
However, many people working there confirmed to the couple that there was no one named Trung, nor had anyone dug up any antiques. Realizing that she had been scammed, Mrs. P. went to the Bau Nang Commune Police Station to report the incident.
Mr. Huynh Hung Thoi - Acting Chairman of Bau Nang Commune People's Committee said that after receiving the report from Ms. LKP, the commune leaders requested the Commune Police to verify and extract images from cameras of surrounding households. Through initial verification, the subject was not a local resident.
According to Mr. Thoi, there are currently many scammers with many different forms and tricks. In the case of Ms. P., through working with the Commune Police, it was determined that when making the transaction, the subject also clearly stated that he bought the banana bunch with copper, not as valuable as gold or silver. Therefore, there is no basis for Ms. P. to say that she was scammed.
Through the above incident, the leaders of Bau Nang commune also advised people to be extremely vigilant with strangers when introducing the purchase and sale of antiques, and should not transact the purchase and sale of goods advertised as antiques from strangers when their identity, origin and source have not been determined.
When detecting cases with signs of suspected fraud and property appropriation, people need to promptly report to the nearest police station for instructions on how to handle the situation.
