The plane fell freely nearly 500m
The incident occurred on an Airbus A330-900 flight of Delta Airlines (USA) departing from Salt Lake City (USA) to Amsterdam (Netherlands) when it suddenly encountered serious turbulence.
At the time, the plane was carrying 275 passengers and 13 crew members.

During the flight, which lasted about 8 hours, the plane encountered turbulence and fell nearly 500m in 85 seconds. Many passengers recounted the terrifying moment when the plane suddenly shook violently, causing them to be thrown from their seats and hit their heads on the ceiling of the cabin.
Around the scene, food and beverage carts were also flying and breaking everywhere, creating a chaotic scene. After that, the captain contacted the plane to land safely at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport at around 8:00 p.m. on July 30 (local time).

Firefighters and paramedics were immediately present at the gate to provide first aid to the victims. According to a Delta Airlines representative, 25 people, including 7 flight attendants, were taken to the hospital for “examination and treatment”. All were discharged on July 31.
The remaining passengers were arranged by the airline to continue their journey to Amsterdam on a special flight on the evening of July 31.
Passengers recount terrifying moments
William Webster, a passenger on the flight, told ABC News that the incident happened about 45 minutes after takeoff. For him, it was a “terrifying experience.”
This passenger said the plane shook violently for about 3-5 minutes when it started entering the turbulence area.
“There was screaming. A woman sitting next to me started crying. I saw someone’s phone flying into the air. Then there was the drinks trolley being thrown up into the ceiling and glass bottles were flying everywhere,” the passenger recalled.
Webster described the feeling as being on a roller coaster. It was like being free-falling from a height of 300 feet, lifted off the seat with only the safety bar holding you up.

Meanwhile, Leeann Nash, a passenger flying with her husband, told KSTP (ABC Minneapolis) that the turbulence occurred right when the flight attendants were starting to serve dinner.
“There was absolutely no warning. It was a sudden, violent impact. Anyone who was not wearing a seat belt was thrown up into the ceiling and then onto the floor. The service cart was also thrown up into the ceiling and then onto the floor, injuring many people. This happened many times, it was really scary,” Nash said.
According to this passenger's observation, glass bottles flew out of nowhere while the food cart was very heavy. Luckily, she and her husband were both wearing seat belts at the time, but they still saw the phone flying and falling all over the plane floor.
Meanwhile, many passengers praised the flight crew for being calm, well-trained and quick to react.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) continue to investigate the cause of the incident.
According to aviation experts, when a plane encounters turbulence, passengers should immediately fasten their seat belts and remain seated. Flight attendants will provide specific instructions, but following the crew's instructions and fastening your seat belts is the most important measure.
In addition, passengers need to try to stay calm and avoid panic to be able to react best to the situation.
