Tunnel boring machine for the Nhon metro line.

The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), named "Thunderbolt," has arrived at S10 - Cat Linh station, marking a significant milestone for the Hanoi pilot urban railway project, Nhon - Hanoi station section.

According to the Urban Railway Management Board, as of today (March 7th), the first TBM tunnel boring machine, named "Thần Tốc" (Speedy), has officially arrived at S10 - Cát Linh station, marking an important milestone in the construction of the Nhổn - Hanoi station urban railway line.

The contractors are thrilled that the tunnel boring machine has advanced to Cat Linh station.

The TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) is the first tunnel boring machine to be deployed in package CP03 - Tunnels and Underground Stations of the project. Starting from station S9 - Kim Ma on July 30, 2024, after many months of safe operation, the machine has completed the drilling and installation of the tunnel lining for a length of over 1,338m to reach station S10 - Cat Linh, strictly adhering to technical and environmental standards.

TBM machine number 2 started operating from station S9 (Kim Ma station) on February 3rd. It is expected that both TBM machines will complete all tunnel boring work by the end of 2025.

After drilling is completed at station S12 - Hanoi station, the drill heads of the TBMs will be dismantled at this station, and the auxiliary equipment will be towed and dismantled at station S9 - Kim Ma.

Mr. Nguyen Ba Son, Deputy Head of the Hanoi Railway Management Board, stated: "The official arrival of the high-speed TBM at S10 - Cat Linh station is a significant step forward for the project. This is the result of continuous efforts to overcome difficulties, as well as close coordination between the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board, consultants, contractors, and relevant parties in ensuring the progress, quality, and safety of the project."

As of March 2nd, the overall construction progress of package CP03 - Tunnel and underground stations reached 55.38%. The underground ramp is 76.63% complete, station S9 is 50.50% complete, the vertical shaft is 24.51% complete, the tunnel line is 51.48% complete, and stations S10, S11, and S12 (including the transfer road and garage) are 64.64%, 58.1%, and 59.74% complete, respectively.

Construction activities are underway at all sites. Specifically, the S10 - Cat Linh station is currently implementing the southern auxiliary structure, mobilizing and installing the push frame system to receive the TBM; the S11 - Van Mieu station has completed the concrete pouring for the bottom slab; and the S12 - Hanoi station is simultaneously constructing the transfer slab and excavating for the mezzanine slab.

The Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board is committed to continuing to closely coordinate with relevant parties to complete the next phases, aiming to bring the entire project into operation as soon as possible.

Throughout the construction process, the Project utilizes a geotechnical monitoring system to ensure the monitoring and tracking of ground displacement and subsidence. Tunneling will be carried out with caution and strict supervision to ensure the safety of existing structures as well as the quality of the ongoing construction.

The underground section is expected to be completed in 2027, after which the entire Hanoi Metro Line 3, Nhon - Hanoi Station section, will be put into operation, contributing to changing the face of the capital city, conveniently connecting various areas and promoting sustainable development and greening of urban transportation.

The Nhon - Hanoi Station urban railway project is one of the city's key transportation projects, contributing to reducing traffic congestion, improving the public transport system, and enhancing the quality of the urban environment. Construction of the tunnel section is being carried out with high determination, ensuring safety, quality, and progress according to the planned schedule.
