"I have scored many goals that could have been more beautiful, more important, but that header is always my favourite," said Messi, who helped Barcelona seal a 2-0 win over Manchester United, winning his first Champions League title and ushering in a period of dominance for the Catalan club under Pep Guardiola.
Messi, who is short and rarely scores with his head, unexpectedly headed in a cross from Xavi, leaving Van der Sar rooted to the spot. It was a goal that was surprising in terms of scoring, and has symbolic value for Messi's career and legacy at Barca.
Messi will soon collaborate with digital artist Refik Anadol to turn that moment into a work of art for a charity campaign called "A Goal in Life". The project uses AI technology and biological data to recreate the goal as a unique digital work that combines sport , memory and emotion.
"I'm very impressed with Refik's work. We met in Miami, and it was exciting to see how he can turn a goal into a real work of art," Messi shared.
The work will be co-signed by Messi and Refik and auctioned at Christie's in New York on June 11. All proceeds will go toeducation and community support programs, managed by the Inter Miami CF Foundation.
UEFA also officially granted the rights to use the image of Messi's goal to the Inter Miami CF Foundation for this campaign. Through this, not only Barca fans, but the whole world can once again relive that moment in a completely new form.
