On the morning of July 31, the Argentine superstar expressed his attitude towards Coccaro during Inter Miami's 2-1 win over Atlas in the first round of the Leagues Cup. The incident happened in the 90+8 minute, when VAR recognized Inter Miami's goal by Weigandt.
Messi then celebrated with his teammates. The Argentine star went to shout at Atlas' Coccaro. At the end of the match, Coccaro shared: "As soon as we (Atlas) scored the equalizer 1-1, I started to encourage my teammates - we were aiming for the second goal, that's why I celebrated like that (provoking Inter Miami)".
"But then Inter Miami scored again, and then Messi came to celebrate right in front of me, shouting: 'Go get the second goal' - what could I say? I had to keep quiet," Coccaro added.
According to Clarin, Messi was not satisfied with the provocative celebration of his compatriot on Atlas' side, so he wanted to "show off" to his opponent at the end of the match.
“I mean, he’s the greatest player of all time. You can’t say anything back,” Coccaro laughed, adding. “After the game, Leo came up to me, hugged me and said sorry. He really regretted that celebration. That says a lot about Leo. When someone like Messi speaks to you, you just listen. I have nothing but respect for the greatest player in history.”
Inter Miami got off to a flying start in the 2025 Leagues Cup, facing Mexico's Atlas Guadalajara. Coccaro's equalizer in the 85th minute gave Atlas hope, but Messi's late assist sealed the deal.
