Unlike the paid version of Microsoft Office 365, users can install this free version on their computers and create new files. In addition to the included ads, this version also offers some limited functionality.
Previously, Microsoft 365 Online was the only way to get the free software, albeit with some limitations. Now, Microsoft is testing a new service to replace it, although the company has not yet announced official plans for the free version. According to PCWorld, this version of Office is in a limited beta and was not available on Microsoft's official website until Beebom discovered the download page.
Some limitations with the free version of Office
Each app in the free Office suite displays a large banner ad on the right side of the window and plays a 15-second muted video every few hours. Like the web version, users can only save files to OneDrive. Copying files from OneDrive to local storage is simple, but it requires an extra step as Microsoft's way of encouraging users to sign up for Microsoft 365 Premium. Features locked in the paid version include smart recommendations, add-ons, and data analysis tools.
Users who want to try out the ad-supported version can find a hidden download page on the Microsoft Office website. While Beebom says it’s only available for Windows, a download button for macOS is also available. To install, users simply run the executable and follow the instructions. When you open an Office app, click Skip for now on the pop-up window and select Continue for free, then select Save to OneDrive to avoid purchasing a subscription.
Microsoft doesn't have any plans to release the full version at this time, so it's unclear whether the company will remove the trial download. The official way to use Office offline without a subscription is through the standalone paid version that Microsoft released last year. Office 2024 is currently available for PC and macOS for $160, while Office 2021 is currently on sale for $70. While both versions offer similar basic features, Office 2024 includes performance optimization features and will continue to receive updates.
