Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of Weather Forecasting Department, commented on the heavy rain in the North.

On the morning of June 28, Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of Weather Forecast Department, National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, informed about the heavy rain in the North, lasting from now until July 2.

Accordingly, the Northern region is currently experiencing widespread showers and thunderstorms. The rain will continue from now until July 2.

Mr. Huong said that this rain started on June 26 and lasted until the morning of June 28. In the evening of June 28, heavy rain returned and lasted continuously until July 2.

"We estimate that the total rainfall during this heavy rain will range from 100-300mm, with some places over 500mm," Mr. Huong informed.

According to Mr. Huong, the cause of this heavy rain is due to a low pressure trough that passes through the Northern region and tends to become stronger in the coming days. In addition, on this low trough, there is a low vortex located in the Northern region, operating at an altitude of 3,000 - 5,000 m.

The low-pressure area combined with the impact of the low-pressure trough creates a large amount of moisture in the Northern region, causing very heavy rain for this area in the coming time.

However, Mr. Huong assessed that the total rainfall during this period is from 100 - 300 mm, lasting from June 28 to July 2. Thus, the total rainfall is large but divided evenly over 5 days is not too large.

In some local areas, the total rainfall can reach 500 mm, which is not particularly large compared to the rain in early June.

“We believe that the total rainfall of up to 500 mm is not a record in the near future,” Mr. Huong said.

However, Mr. Huong warned that the center of this heavy rain is still concentrated in the Northern region. This area has recently experienced widespread and prolonged rain. The total rainfall is higher than the average of many years.

“The Northern region continues to have moderate to heavy rain over a wide area, with prolonged rain, with some areas experiencing heavy rain of over 100 mm/3 hours, so we note that the most dangerous phenomenon that can cause damage to people and property is flash floods and landslides in mountainous and midland areas of the North,” Mr. Huong emphasized.

In addition, urban flooding in the near future is also likely to occur.

The heaviest rain is likely to be around the night of June 30 - morning of July 1.

Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Huy, an expert on climate change and natural disaster warning, also commented on this rain. Specifically, the convergence zone of clouds in the mountainous and midland areas of the North will continue to cause heavy rain until July 2.

“People should be aware of heavy rains mainly at night and early morning. The heaviest rains will occur around the night of June 30 and the morning of July 1 with average rainfall ranging from 100 to 150 mm, with some areas experiencing over 225 mm of rain within 24 hours,” Huy noted.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on the night of June 27 and the morning of June 28, in the Northern region, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, with some places experiencing heavy to very heavy rain; in the Northeast region, there will be rain, moderate rain, and some places experiencing heavy to very heavy rain. The rainfall from 7:00 p.m. on June 27 to 8:00 a.m. this morning was over 110 mm in some places, such as: Cu Van (Thai Nguyen) 164.2 mm, Muong Lai (Yen Bai) 160.6 mm, Cao Bo ( Ha Giang ) 150 mm, Thuong Am (Tuyen Quang) 112.6 mm, ...

Northern weather likely to receive heavy rain, causing flooding

The Meteorological Agency forecasts that from the night of June 28 to the night of June 29, in the Northern region, there will continue to be moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain with common rainfall from 40 - 100 mm, locally over 250 mm.

Warning of risk of heavy localized rain (>100 mm/3h)

On July 28, in the Northwest region, there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain with rainfall from 10-20mm, locally over 50mm; in the Northeast, there will be more rain with rainfall from 10-40mm, locally over 70mm.

In the late afternoon and evening of June 27, in Thanh Hoa , the Central Highlands and the South, there were also thunderstorms with rainfall of 10 - 30 mm, with some places having heavy rain of over 50 mm.

Notably, on the day and night of June 30, in the North, there will be moderate rain, heavy rain, locally very heavy rain and thunderstorms with common rainfall of 40 - 80 mm, locally over 150 mm. Heavy rain in the North is likely to last until around July 2 (total rainfall from the night of June 28 - July 2, in the North, common rainfall is 100 - 300 mm, locally over 500 mm).

During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind. Authorities and people need to closely monitor forecasts and warnings on official information sites to have plans to respond to extreme natural disasters, ensuring the safety of people and property.

Flood warning on rivers in the North

From June 28 to June 29, on the upper reaches of Thao, Lo, Cau, Thuong and Luc Nam rivers, small rivers in the Northern region are likely to experience a flood, with flood amplitudes on the rivers ranging from 2 - 4 m. During this flood, the flood peak on small rivers, upstream of Thao, Lo rivers, and small rivers is likely to reach alert level 1 - alert level 2, while the downstream of Thao and Lo rivers is still below alert level 1.

High risk of flooding in low-lying areas along rivers, flash floods and landslides on steep slopes in mountainous areas of the North.
