Northern Vietnam experiences severe cold until January 28th.

VnExpressVnExpress26/01/2024

On January 27-28, temperatures in the North rose, and ice in high-altitude areas gradually melted, but the weather remained severely cold, with average daily temperatures below 13 degrees Celsius.

Entering the fifth day of the severe cold spell, temperatures in the North have risen by 1-2 degrees Celsius today compared to the coldest day, January 23rd. The National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting reports that 11 out of 25 provinces and cities still have temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius, mainly in mountainous areas.

Ice remains only in Mau Son ( Lang Son ) and Xin Cai (Ha Giang), but the area is shrinking due to temperatures above 0 degrees Celsius. Other high-altitude locations such as Sa Pa (Lao Cai) are near 3 degrees; Dong Van (Ha Giang) is over 3 degrees; Tam Dao (Vinh Phuc) and Cho Ra (Bac Kan) are 5-6 degrees Celsius.

The meteorological agency explained that the temperature increase was due to the cold air mass stabilizing and showing signs of weakening. However, the weakening process was slower than previously predicted, so the North remained severely cold on January 27-28; on January 29, it was intensely cold, with average daily temperatures dropping from 15 to 13 degrees Celsius. There were occasional light rains.

From January 30th to February 4th (the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month), the weather in the North will gradually warm up, creating favorable conditions for shopping during the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Dragon.

The US Accuweather website forecasts Hanoi temperatures to fluctuate between 10-14 degrees Celsius on January 27-28, and 14-15 degrees Celsius on January 29, then increasing by 2-3 degrees Celsius each day. High-altitude areas above 1,500 meters above sea level, such as Sa Pa, will maintain severe cold until the end of January 29, with daytime temperatures gradually rising to 8-15 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures to 6-9 degrees Celsius.

The severe cold in Central Vietnam, particularly in Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces, will persist until the end of today, after which the weather will warm up, with cold temperatures only remaining at night and in the morning.

The severe cold spell in northern Vietnam began on January 23rd, with frost appearing on numerous mountain peaks over 1,000 meters high, such as Mau Son (Lang Son), Thuong Phu, Xin Cai (Ha Giang), Cao Ly (Quang Ninh), and O Quy Ho (Lao Cai). In central Hanoi, the lowest temperature recorded at Ha Dong station was 8.7 degrees Celsius on January 23rd.

The severe cold weather has forced hundreds of thousands of students in northern Vietnam to stay home from school. Many elderly people and young children have been hospitalized due to respiratory illnesses, strokes, and cardiovascular problems.
