On the afternoon of July 31, the Department of Information and Communications (DoIC) launched the Ho Chi Minh City Artificial Intelligence Challenge (AI Challenge) 2023. This year, the contest expanded its scope to include high school students.
This year's Artificial Intelligence Challenge (AI Challenge) is jointly organized by Ho Chi Minh City National University, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Education and Training, Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union, City Information Technology Association and accompanying units.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mr. Vo Minh Thanh, Deputy Director of the Department of Information and Communications, said that the contest aims to encourage individuals and research groups at home and abroad to propose and improve advanced AI application solutions, thereby solving important problems serving life.

Many students passionate about artificial intelligence research came to the University of Natural Sciences , VNU-HCM to attend the launching ceremony.
"This year's contest expands the contestants to high school students, helping them gradually approach the field of artificial intelligence, thereby orienting their future careers and participating in the city's artificial intelligence workforce," Mr. Thanh emphasized.
Schools and candidates asked questions to the contest organizers.
According to Mr. Thanh, in 2021, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee approved the program "Research and development of artificial intelligence (AI) applications for the period 2020 - 2030" to build and develop an ecosystem for research, development and application of artificial intelligence; making artificial intelligence a key technology for digital transformation.
The program also aims to provide smart solutions for smart services and products, contributing to building Ho Chi Minh City into a smart city, a creative city, becoming the center of Vietnam and the ASEAN region in research, deployment and transfer of artificial intelligence application products.
The theme of this year's competition is Retrieving events from videos.
Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Minh Triet, Vice Principal of the University of Natural Sciences (Ho Chi Minh City National University), said that the participants are Vietnamese individuals at home and abroad; foreigners living, studying and working in Vietnam.
The contest is organized in 2 groups: Group A is for students and young people; Group B is for high school students in Ho Chi Minh City who love information technology and want to learn about artificial intelligence.
Introducing the contest rules, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Minh Triet said that contestants will develop artificial intelligence algorithms to solve problems in life, applying them to serve Ho Chi Minh City according to the contest's theme.

Because this is the first year for high school students to participate in the contest, Mr. Ngo Quoc Hung, a teacher at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, is especially interested in the contest's rules and scoring methods.

In the 2023 competition, the expected problem is to query events from videos, similar to the international competition Lifelog Search Challenge (LSC) and Video Browser Showdown (VBS). Contestants in Group B are allowed to use available tools provided by the organizers to carry out the requirements of the competition.
In 2022, the contest was held for the first time in Ho Chi Minh City, attracting more than 200 teams and more than 1,000 contestants from 40 domestic and foreign units. The total number of awards given at the 2022 contest included 1 first prize, 1 second prize, 4 third prizes, and 7 consolation prizes. The total prize money was nearly 200 million VND.
The registration period for the contest is from the launch date to August 10. Participants register their information through the electronic portal https://aichallenge.hochiminhcity.gov.vn/
On August 30, the organizing committee will announce the results of the preliminary round. The final round will take place from September 5 to September 25.
