The Tan Ky Tan Quy road, a nearly 2-kilometer stretch in Binh Tan district, has been widened from 8-10 meters to 30 meters, helping to reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic flow at the northwestern gateway of the city.

In mid-May, both sides of Tan Ky Tan Quy road near the Nuoc Den canal resembled a "massive construction site" as numerous houses were demolished, their front sections moved further back to make way for the road expansion project. Many homeowners had already renovated and rebuilt their houses, settling into their new homes and businesses after handing over their land. Meanwhile, many other families were hiring workers and machinery to complete their facades and rearrange their shops. Along the route, workers busily excavated the road, installed drainage pipes, and laid utility trenches in sections where the land had already been handed over.

Ms. Nguyen Hien, 45 years old, owner of a roadside eatery on Tan Ky Tan Quy Street, said that after being persuaded by the authorities, her house began to be demolished before the Lunar New Year in 2023, handing over nearly 40 square meters to the project. The remaining area is only half of what it was before, disrupting daily life, but her family readily agreed to hand over the land because the road widening would make transportation more convenient and increase the value of their property. "In the near future, construction will be carried out simultaneously, so business and trade will be significantly affected. We hope the project will be implemented quickly so that people can stabilize their lives," Ms. Hien said.

Construction began in March on the Tan Ky Tan Quy road expansion project, spanning nearly two kilometers through Binh Tan district, from Binh Long road to Ma Lo road. On this section, the road surface will be widened to 30 meters, and a comprehensive drainage system, landscaping, and lighting will be constructed, with a total cost exceeding 237 billion VND.

To implement the project, 380 households and organizations in Binh Hung Hoa and Binh Hung Hoa B wards were partially relocated and separated into a separate compensation and land clearance project implemented by the local authorities with a total budget of approximately 995 billion VND.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Transport Infrastructure Construction Investment Project Management Board (TCIP - the investor), the project is being constructed in parallel with compensation and land clearance work. It is expected that this year, Binh Tan District will complete compensation and hand over the entire site to the investor, allowing the project to be completed by the fourth quarter of next year.

"Currently, the construction process is facing some difficulties such as narrow and unconnected land areas, and some sections are obstructed by unremoved technical infrastructure, which is affecting the project's progress," a TCIP representative said, adding that they are focusing on coordinating with relevant parties to resolve obstacles and organize traffic appropriately, as the road must be used for traffic while under construction.

Tan Ky Tan Quy is one of the main arteries at the northwestern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, connecting Hoc Mon district, Binh Tan, Tan Phu, and Tan Binh districts with Tan Son Nhat airport and the city center. This road currently has a width of about 8-10 meters, so it frequently experiences traffic congestion, especially during peak hours, due to the consistently high volume of vehicles.

According to Phan Cong Bang, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, in addition to the expansion in Binh Tan District, the Tan Ky Tan Quy road section from Le Trong Tan to Cong Hoa, located in Tan Phu and Tan Binh Districts, also has a project underway to eliminate the frequently congested "bottleneck." This section is nearly 650 meters long and will be widened to 30 meters; it was previously divided into three component projects.

Of that total, the construction component has a capital of over 96 billion VND, along with two compensation and land clearance projects implemented by local authorities with a total cost of approximately 561 billion VND. However, the expansion of this section is currently suspended, awaiting adjustments to the investment plan, which will combine compensation and construction into a single project for implementation. Besides the road expansion, the Tan Ky Tan Quy bridge project is also on the route and will soon be completed by the city after nearly 5 years of suspension.
