Recently, people passing through the Tan Ap border gate area (Ba Dinh district) were extremely surprised to see a section of the ceramic road being destroyed.

In 2010, the Ceramic Road was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's longest ceramic mural (3,850 meters long), stretching from Van Kiet Gate (Hoan Kiem District) to An Duong Gate (Tay Ho District). The entire structure is composed of 27 interconnected ceramic mural sections, each depicting various themes and patterns reflecting historical events.

According to information from the Ba Dinh District People's Committee, the district is currently implementing a project to expand the Tan Ap sluice gate at K64+455 of the Huu Hong dike from two bays to three bays.

Previously, voters in Phuc Xa ward had made numerous requests regarding the expansion of Tan Ap and Long Bien border gates. They requested the "expansion of Tan Ap and Long Bien border gates as soon as possible, due to the presence of many agencies and armed forces units stationed in the ward, resulting in high traffic volume and frequent congestion at these two gates." In particular, because the Tan Ap border gate is not large enough, the city has not allocated large-capacity fire trucks to the Ba Dinh District Police Fire and Rescue Team, affecting firefighting and rescue operations in the district.

A representative from the Ba Dinh District Investment and Construction Project Management Board stated that although the investment project is not large, it is a special-grade dike project requiring numerous related procedures. When fully expanded to nearly 16 meters, the sluice gate will no longer have a central concrete pillar. When floods occur, all the steel reinforcement in the tunnel will be pulled out to block the floodwaters. Because there is no central pillar, the sluice gate will be much wider than before.

Regarding the demolition of the ceramic road, a representative from the district's project management board informed: The project involves demolishing 44.7 meters of old concrete and replacing it with 35.5 meters of new concrete to create a tunnel for storing the sluice gates. This also includes relocating trees, installing lighting, and restoring the ceramic road.

"We have contacted the creator of the ceramic road because the project affected several tens of square meters of ceramics. The creator has now provided a revised perspective drawing ensuring the composition after reduction, for example, two lotus flower paintings reduced to one. This will be fully reimbursed," the representative stated.

He added: "The special-grade dike project is only permitted to be constructed during the dry season, from November 20, 2024 to April 30, 2025. We have accelerated the progress to complete and put the project into use before March 30, 2025."

Not only the construction sections, but many other sections along the ceramic road have also been damaged and peeled off due to a lack of maintenance over a long period.
