(Dan Tri Newspaper) - By planting the "billion-dollar tree," residents of a commune in Lam Dong province earn incomes ranging from hundreds of millions to over 10 billion VND per year. According to statistics, this commune has 300 households with incomes exceeding 1 billion VND per year.
On February 4th, leaders of Ha Lam commune, Da Huoai district, Lam Dong province, announced that the locality has 2,300 hectares of durian trees, of which 1,800 hectares are currently being commercially harvested. The durian harvesting season here begins in May and ends in mid-July each year.
According to statistics, in the 2024 harvest season, Ha Lam commune harvested nearly 20,000 tons of durian. The majority of this production was purchased by businesses in Da Huoai district and neighboring localities for export to the Chinese market.
According to local leaders, in the 2024 harvest season, two households earned over 10 billion VND and 300 households earned over 1 billion VND from durian cultivation.
Durian and cashew are the two main crops of Ha Lam commune. The people have focused on developing durian cultivation since 2006, and the planted area has expanded significantly since 2010.
Recognizing the high economic efficiency of durian cultivation, the Ha Lam commune government encourages residents to maintain the planted area and organize production in a way that improves product quality.
Ha Lam commune has a natural area of 124 square kilometers and a population of approximately 7,700 people. In 2024, the average per capita income of the commune reached over 110 million VND/person/year.
Durian has now risen to the position of "king of fruits" in Vietnam, joining the group of "billion-dollar" agricultural products, bringing in export value of approximately 3.2 billion USD in 2024.
