Coach Jose Mourinho has spoken out for the first time about being sacked by Roma, implying that the Italian club's owners don't understand much about football.
Mourinho is still bitter about being sacked on January 16th, even though Roma were only five points away from the top four in Serie A and had already qualified for the Europa League knockout stage. "I'm not managing any team in this round, not because I've been eliminated by any opponent, but because someone who doesn't understand football sacked me," the Portuguese coach told Football .

Mourinho was alluding to Roma owner Dan Friedkin when the American billionaire called him directly to announce his decision to sack the 61-year-old coach. Friedkin, 59, bought Roma from James Pallotta for $591 million in 2019. Like many American owners of European clubs, this businessman with a net worth of $6 billion doesn't know much about football.
"Life has its ups and downs, so I will still try my best, despite being sacked suddenly and unfairly," Mourinho added. "I will come back, with greater inspiration and confidence for the European Cup matches."
Mourinho led Roma to the Conference League title in 2022, in his first season, ending the team's 14-year trophy drought. A year later, he led Roma to the Europa League final, only losing to Sevilla on penalties. He remains the only manager to have won all three European competitions: the Champions League, the Europa League, and the Conference League.
Mourinho believes that having managed teams in so many finals, he understands how to lead a club to success. "I have enough experience and knowledge to build a team, even when the opponents are potentially better," he said. "In the knockout rounds, I always aim to win the first leg, so that in the second leg I know exactly what I need to do to secure qualification."
Since being sacked by Roma, there have been many rumors about Mourinho's next destination, such as Chelsea, Barcelona, or Bayern Munich. "The Special One" has ruled out the possibility of working in the Saudi Pro League at this time, as he still wants to remain involved in top-level European football.
