As a mountainous district, Mu Cang Chai has a total paddy field area of over 4,400 hectares, with the total area planted with rice throughout the year reaching over 6,100 hectares. Therefore, along with developing hybrid rice varieties to ensure local food security, in recent years, implementing the policy of restructuring crop and livestock production; shifting the mindset from agricultural production to agricultural economics , Mu Cang Chai district has leveraged the advantages of local soil, climate, and water resources in Cao Pha and Nam Co communes to expand the area of Tan glutinous rice cultivation towards commercial production.
Located adjacent to Tu Le commune in Van Chan district, Cao Pha and Nam Co communes share similar natural conditions such as soil, climate, and water resources with Tu Le, enabling them to cultivate high-quality Tan sticky rice (Tu Le sticky rice), turning it into a marketable commodity. Cao Pha commune alone has a total paddy field area of over 320 hectares, with more than 270 hectares cultivated twice a year.
Currently, in addition to cultivating hybrid and non-hybrid rice varieties to ensure local food security, people have effectively utilized the unique advantages bestowed by nature to convert sandy soil fields near streams, ensuring a reliable water supply for irrigation, expanding the area for Tan sticky rice production, and contributing to increased income per unit area.
Mr. Giàng A Thênh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Cao Phạ commune, said: "Because Tan sticky rice has high economic value, in addition to harvesting mature rice for grain, in recent years, selling unripe rice to rice pounding facilities in Tú Lệ commune has also been very convenient and provides high income, so people are confident in converting suitable rice fields from growing regular rice to cultivating Tan sticky rice as a commodity."
Thanks to this, the area planted with Tan glutinous rice in Cao Pha commune currently reaches over 100 hectares per year, with a yield of over 500 tons. Located in the upstream area of Tu Le commune, Nam Co commune also has similar natural conditions in terms of weather, climate, soil, and water resources. Furthermore, being a commune with a large area and many rice paddies, the area planted with Tan glutinous rice, according to commune statistics, reaches over 150 hectares per year, not including areas where people spontaneously convert land according to each season. Every year, Nam Co commune exports a significant amount of young rice to the market for making Tan glutinous rice flakes and rice, bringing a large income to the people.
Mr. Sung A Ninh, from Ta Ghenh village, Nam Co commune, shared: "Besides farming and doing odd jobs around the commune in my free time after the harvest, my family has no other source of income. So, to increase our income and provide for our children's education, with the area of paddy fields we have, in recent years, I only keep about 2 sao (approximately 0.2 hectares) for growing regular rice, two crops a year, to get enough rice for consumption. The remaining area is used for growing Tan glutinous rice. Thanks to this, after deducting expenses and the portion saved for consumption during the year, I earn over 20 million VND from selling glutinous rice each season.”
In addition to expanding the cultivated area and focusing on applying science and technology to production, intensive farming, processing, and preservation to improve the productivity, yield, quality, and economic efficiency of Tan sticky rice, Mu Cang Chai district has also focused on market access and brand building, creating a reputation for Tan sticky rice in the market.
Currently, Cao Pha commune has established the Khau Pha Organic Agricultural Cooperative, linking 60 households in the commune to jointly cultivate Tan sticky rice on a total area of over 14 hectares, with a total production of over 70 tons per year, gradually promoting and enhancing the brand of Tan sticky rice. At the same time, the cooperative has strictly implemented organic seed selection, care, harvesting, and drying processes, helping to improve rice quality, attractive packaging, and making it a popular choice for consumers both within and outside the province.
In the future, to make the local Tan sticky rice product more widely known to consumers, especially to increase its competitiveness in the market, along with focusing on applying science and technology to production, intensive farming, processing, and preservation in a "clean" manner by producers, it is also very necessary for Party committees and authorities at all levels to pay attention to guiding, attracting investment, and promoting Tan sticky rice so that the product can bring increasingly higher economic value to the local people.
