The Europa League final is financially important for Manchester United. |
In round 36 of the Premier League, Manchester United suffered their 17th defeat in the 2024/25 Premier League season when they were defeated 0-2 by West Ham at Old Trafford. This result pushed the "Red Devils" down to 16th place in the rankings.
If they stay in this position, they will only receive £14m in prize money from the Premier League organizers, a decrease of £22.4m compared to the same period last year.
Last season, Manchester United finished eighth in the Premier League and received £36.4 million. The decline in Premier League prize money has had a huge impact on the Manchester club's finances.
Although winning the Europa League this season could bring in an additional £10.95m to Manchester United's revenue, this figure is not enough to offset the loss from the lowly Premier League position.
However, the bigger financial benefits will come next season, when a place in the 2025/26 Champions League could earn Manchester United at least £20m from the qualifying rounds.
In the most optimistic scenario, Manchester United could rise to 13th place if they play well in the final two rounds of the Premier League this season, thereby receiving a total of £21 million in performance-based bonuses.
But to achieve that, they need to overcome Chelsea and Aston Villa, which seems unlikely, given that coach Amorim wants to rotate his squad to save energy for the Europa League final against Tottenham in the early morning of May 22.
