Real Betis confirm failure to reach agreement with Antony, creating deadlock with Manchester United. |
In a statement quoted by Marca , Betis representatives confirmed: "No agreement has been signed with Antony or Manchester United, and we have withdrawn the offer. The club cannot afford to pay the transfer fee, the player's wages as well as the amounts Manchester United requested to complete the deal."
According to AS , this statement shocked the Manchester United board, as the English club thought it had completed the player's departure this summer. The Antony transfer went through dramatic developments in just two days, August 29 and early morning August 30.
Manchester United initially accepted a loan offer that included a mandatory €25m buyout clause, but then allowed Antony to travel to Spain to finalise personal terms.
However, at the last minute, Betis felt they could not meet Antony's salary demands, and also believed that the player's buyout fee was too high. The Spanish team hoped that the player would reduce his salary or that Manchester United would continue to reduce the price. Obviously, the "Red Devils" refused.
This caused Real Betis to suddenly announce their withdrawal from the deal. Manchester United hoped that this was just a negotiating tactic by Betis. However, the statement from the La Liga club pushed the "Red Devils" into a deadlock when the 2025 summer transfer window was about to close on September 1.
