Pu Lau is nearly 15km from the center of Muong Nha commune, with convenient transportation for travel and trading. In recent years, around June and July, the image of Pu Lau people carrying large baskets of pineapples from the fields to temporary huts, with traders waiting to pick up goods and choose pineapples is no longer strange. The hustle and bustle of buyers and sellers, the joy of the people weighing down each basket full of pineapples, is an affirmation that this is the main crop for economic development, pushing back poverty in this highland border village.
Pu Lau pineapple is a honey pineapple variety, originating from Laos, favored for its sweetness, juiciness and large size. On average, each honey pineapple weighs from 1.5-3kg. Previously, pineapples were only grown on a small scale to serve family needs; due to the suitable climate and soil, they have high quality and productivity, and have gradually been widely grown by the villagers. From a few dozen or a few hundred square meters at first, the pineapple area of the village has now reached nearly 60 hectares and is the place with the largest pineapple growing area in the commune. Most of the villagers grow pineapples, from the initially ineffective rice and cassava fields that have gradually been replaced by rows of pineapples that produce sweet fruit and a stable source of income every year.
Mr. Vang A Tenh, Secretary of Pu Lau village Party Cell, said: Before expanding the pineapple area, people's livelihoods mainly depended on growing cassava and corn, so life was difficult and the rate of poor households was high. From 2017 to now, households have begun to focus on changing the crop structure, during which time, honey pineapple has helped nearly 10 households in the village escape poverty. After expanding the area, the hillsides around the village are covered with pineapple, the smallest houses have 1,000 - 2,000m2 , the largest houses have 1ha. The whole village has 112 households, 417 people; thanks to pineapple development, there are currently only 7 poor households. Honey pineapple has gradually become the main and stable source of income in the area. Thanks to the effectiveness in economic development as well as the attention of the Party Committee and the commune government, in the coming time, Pu Lau village will actively study science and technology as well as coordinate to implement the project of expanding 20 hectares of pineapple according to the commune's policy. At the same time, for the spontaneous planting area of households, we will try to develop an additional 50 hectares so that honey pineapple becomes the main crop in the socio-economic development of Pu Lau people.
It is currently the pineapple harvest season, along the main road passing through the village are temporary sheds, after each truck carrying pineapples from the fields is a bustling scene of unloading, sorting, packaging... of sellers and buyers; each person has a job, a busy, happy job. Mr. Vang A Song, a resident of Pu Lau village, shared: In recent years, thanks to pineapples, his family has stabilized their lives, no longer besieged by shortages. Currently, his family grows nearly 3,000m2 of pineapples , although the area is not as large as some households in the village, it is enough to cover their living expenses. Each kilo of pineapple costs from 8,000 - 12,000 VND; each harvest is purchased by traders. Pu Lau village is located next to the border belt road connecting to National Highway 279, traffic is quite convenient, passenger buses run regularly and continuously, so in addition to trading directly with traders, for customers from far away, they can also box and send the fruit to customers. It is estimated that the family earns over 40 million VND per crop. In the coming time, around early September, after the season ends, the family will break ground in some low-yield rice and corn fields and replace the remaining with pineapple cultivation to develop the economy.
With the effectiveness of crop restructuring, honey pineapple is increasingly asserting its important role in economic development, improving the quality of life of Pu Lau villagers. In the coming time, pineapple is expected to be a key crop in poverty reduction, promoting local socio-economic development.
