Information from Lao Cai province, rain and wind occurred throughout the night of May 10 to May 11 in the upper stream (many areas exceeded 100mm) causing the water level of the Red River to rise rapidly in the afternoon and evening of May 11.

According to the Lao Cai Provincial Hydrometeorological Station, this is a widespread heavy rain, occurring at the beginning of the 2025 rainy season. The main cause is cold air combined with strong high-altitude convergence zones, causing rain to appear simultaneously in many localities.

According to information from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Lao Cai province, thunderstorms have caused 35 houses to have their roofs blown off and landslides to enter their houses (26 houses in Bao Yen district, 8 houses in Van Ban district and 1 house in Muong Khuong district). Floods have damaged a number of schools, cultural houses, irrigation works, and rural roads in Bao Yen, Bat Xat, and Van Ban districts.

According to the report of the Department of Dyke Management and Natural Disaster Prevention (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), heavy rain and thunderstorms on May 9 and 10 caused the death of Ms. CXM (31 years old, in Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province) due to landslides and floods; Mr. VVP (36 years old, in Binh Duong province) went missing at the construction site of the Cai stream dredging and reinforcement project - from Tho Ut bridge to Dong Nai river, suspected to have been swept away by water. Another resident in Quang Tri province was injured by lightning.

Regarding housing, at least 89 houses were damaged or had their roofs blown off (28 houses in Lao Cai, 2 houses in Son La, 42 houses in Tuyen Quang, 11 houses in Hoa Binh, and 6 houses in Quang Tri). At the same time, nearly 37 hectares of crops and forestry in Tuyen Quang and Lao Cai provinces were flooded; 1.5 tons of young mangoes in Son La province and 4.5 hectares of fish ponds, 105 hectares of agricultural land in Binh Duong were damaged.

Lai Chau hailstorm, total damage 3 billion VND

From the night of May 10 to the morning of May 11, heavy rains, thunderstorms, and hailstorms caused severe damage in many districts of Lai Chau province. According to quick statistics from the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue, nearly 400 houses were affected, of which 7 houses collapsed completely, many schools were damaged, more than 160 hectares of crops were damaged, 4 electric poles fell, many communes lost power, and many streets in Lai Chau city were flooded. The total damage was estimated at nearly 3 billion VND.
